More likely the reason that you can't find anything is because it happened before the internet became commonplace. As another poster said, the details were widely published at the time.

If his lawyers wish to remind everyone precisely what it was he was prosecuted for, that's up to them. I can't remember the precise details but I do know that it led to his sacking from his next job too.

Interestingly. although it comes up with no results Michael Draper Severn Valley Railway is very high up on the Google and Yahoo search priority.

I wonder if we are seeing the good old 'law of unintended consequences' kicking in. This idea of purging the Internet of stories which might be embarrassing or incorrect opens up a huge area for doubt and speculation. If you can't find the truth out (or at least, alternative accounts) on the Internet - which is now where pretty much everyone goes for information - are people going to assume that the information has been purged - and then go on to impute the worst possible motives to that action? Given human nature I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised.

One cannot imagine a reputable library insisting all history books which differed from orthodoxy be purged.

If I had been accused of impropriety I'd want my defence up for everyone to see.

I'm sorry to see the Teifi Valley railway go - but it looks like that is the reality, and the circumstances would appear to be such that it had severe structural flaws (in terms of company structure, conflicting aims and goals etc.) from the outset and they have finally had inevitable consequences, sadly it seems just as some progress had recently been achieved. Any such problems are of course going to be worse for a small thinly supported organisation - its much easier for a single person to dominate. Tom Rolt deliberately set up the TR so that couldn't happen due to unfortunate experiences elsewhere - and subsequently found he himself was limited by the very structures he set up! But I'm sure he was right to set things up in that way.

According to the Teifis own website, the Joffee has already been sold?

    Quote:-

Our locomotive was purchased by a consortium of people in 1999 from Gloddfa Ganol Slate Museum in Blaenau Ffestiniog with the intention of restoring for use on the TVR.

However restoration eluded this locomotive and it has languished in bits at Henllan since its arrival. Now, hopefully, it has a more certain future as it has been purchased by a group in Kent with a view to restoration there.

That was an unrestored Joffre, not Sgt Murphy.

P1010127.JPG This is what has happened to poor Sgt Murphy, property of the TVR Society - but nobody has complained. This is the cab, dumped on its side in the rubbish area. Side tanks lie alongside, beginning to rust. Tragic.

We really need to save this loco. Does anyone have a means to contact the owners and find their price? Emails seem to get no reply....

That is disgraceful......... some society that allows a popular and well liked the Loco to be left like that.

This is a total over the top disgrace and lack of respect not only towards the locomotive itself but to all those who went to the TVR and to the NG movement in general. What's the point going half way round the world to save a rusting locomotive when there's one doing just that down the road. This subject deserves a thread unto itself.

If there were any way of contacting the owner of Sgt Murphy, I'd suggest a new thread to campaign for him/her/it! Either to raise funds to buy the loco or to pressurize the current owners. But I'm unsure who one should contact or the best way to do that (email, write, phone...) I gather emails to the address on the society website are just ignored.
If anyone on this thread knows the contact details perhaps they'd post them or send a private message?

I wonder if there's a way of organasing something on this forum, if we all chipped in it woudn't cost so much and the locomotive could be used as a sort of forum mascot ?

As resident in the UK, would you be interested in starting a new thread? We could at least gauge (pun intended) what possible support there might be! Could we ask perhaps how many people could contribute from 500 pounds up to a grand?
We also need an idea of how much a loco in this condition would cost - we know NG new builds are in the 350,000 to 500,000 range (e.g. Lyn, Corris locos), but I would guess that Sgt Murphy would be quite a bit less than this. We can ask for feedback on this on the new thread.

    Over to you Baldwin! :)
