The GPS tracking for the moment now will not be going ahead, this is due to the GPS providers not being able to meet my requirements, and only stating this after about £400's worth of development on my end.

I am looking at alternative GPS Tracking systems to use.

I will keep you all informed.

    Cheers

A sneak preview of the new site.

I was wondering Glyn. If the page that displayed updates on the forum was too buggy, would a Twitter feed be easier to implement?

That's actually a very good idea!
Should not be an issue to add the system. The problem I have here though is, there are members paying for the service, if they could then get the information via Twitter, then they would be getting that information for free.
    Any thoughts?

Also just a footnote, all the SMS messages you receive will be shown on your tour page on the new RailTour Live site.

Well, a possible starting point: "Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list." (Wiki) and "Protecting your profile means everyone who wants to follow you submits a request for your approval. Only approved followers can see your Twitter updates, which will not appear in search engines." (Twitter).

So perhaps an additional facility on RailTours Live could be for a registered user to request to follow you, via a link on the site, and pay (plucking a figure out of the air) £10 per quarter from their account to be approved as a friend. If you got requests via other routes, you could notify them to subscribe via RailTours Live.

Just thinking aloud with that suggestion......

If that's the case, any paying member can become a 'friend' at no extra cost.

  8. I would definitely explore this option. I set up a Twitter account specifically for WSR train info. The message to Twitter can be hand-entered, or emailed, or by SMS. In my case I wasn't bothered about payment for viewing but you can restrict viewing to approved people only. My stumbling block was and still is the lack of interest by the WSR in getting the Controller to issue updates based on info provided from the 'boxes. With railtours live, you already have an army of willing information-providers. One possible drawback is that in UK, Twitter only issues tweets by SMS to a limited number of mobile phone service providers (or maybe that's changed now)

Well we could provide the missing link?
I am going to look into that today.

If you need any beta testers, let me know and I'll help. I have a Twitter account and Twitter on my phone.

  11. Maybe. I'm not quite sure what that missing link is, though! For me the missing link is ensuring the WSR Controller sends a message by email/sms/handentry to Twitter. Thereafter, anyone can pick up the messages on Twitter (or have 'em sent to their mobile phone) for free. The Twitter account is @wsrinfolive but it is not operational now, just in "sandbox" mode.

Thanks for looking into the possibilities.

http://twitter.com/#!/RailTourLive is the new twitter account.
I am unsure on how to approach this though. As everyone who is 'friends' will see all updates, it could get confusing.

Protecting tweets is how to stop people freeloading from the Twitter Feed. You send a request to the person to allow you to follow them (and thus become a friend) and you would presumably have to provide your login details for your RailTour Live account to have your follow request accepted. Have I got this right?

Also, a new addition, all registered members on RailTour Live, can now use a promotional code every time they top up their account. Rather then just on the first time they top up.

This is now live and will be available to members once the new website goes live.
As a footnote, members who wish to subscribe to the feed must contact me by email.

There seems to be some problem, although I have logged in ok, every time I click on one of the links I keep getting asked if I want to link my account to Facebook. I have said yes to this but still keep being taken back to the same page (do you want to link your account with Facebook?). Can't get anywhere beyond this.
