Never seen by me but much praised - the 242A1 would have been of the Tornado mould had the French seen fit to preserve it. We may scorn the indecent haste with which BR got shot of steam but the scrapping of that remarkably efficient Chapelon was almost criminal. Pinch yourself though......... and this is my last word on Saturday......despite the unhelpful pathing coming home, it remains remarkable that we saw the premier line up the west of Britain with probably the ultimate in steam design sharing the same track as the 21st Century equivalent in modern traction.

If you read the original post again, you will see that I was saying what they had said to me, how this was ambiguous I do not know, things are being read that are not there, and I fail to see why me being a mod has any bearing on it what so ever.

I really think we should count our blessings that these fantastic locos are out and about on the mainlines in Britain, who would have thought in the early 1980's that you would have been able to see, hear and ride behind a brand -new build pacific over Shap?, I take my hat off to everyone who makes this possible for us to enjoy.

Steady on Drysdale, whilst Ralphs post may or may not have been made with his tongue firmly in his cheek, I don't feel it deserves the feeding frenzy that has ensued. Maybe people need to learn to chill and laugh a little more...it's good for keeping the blood pressure within acceptable limits!

I don't discredit the a1 people or anyone in the business of steam preservation. I do like the B1's, k1, k4, Green Arrow. Scotsman has more character as well!

Oh for gods sake give it a rest, you have made your point, but are not satisfied until you have really had you moneys worth. You are getting like some others, flogging on till we are sick of it.

Is it me, or has this thread gone slightly off topic ? : )

I'm a great believer in differences being talked through but it can be frustrating when an interesting thread devolves into something of a slanging match. I very much doubt this exchange would occur if you were face to face. People are much braver in writing than they are in person, the stuff directed at Vanessa Feltz on Twitter today is testament to that.

I do seem to remember "Kent Yeti" thoughtfully creating a "fight" thread to which explosive posts could be moved, but it's never really been used. Maybe this latest locking of horns could see it revived ?
