You will struggle getting a train to the S & C from Preston as the train goes only as far as Clitheroe(change at Blackburn) and not onto Hellifield. Another way is to Leeds and then up the S&C but thats a long way around. Otherwise its upto Carlisle and then back down the S&C or to Carnforth & along the little Northwestern to Hellifield and then change to go north - both routes are longwinded also.... and for a 10,12 start from Hellifield , you may have problems.

Horton -in -Ribblesdale could give good pictures with a walk northward towards Selside - one of my favorite locations

I've done a look on train websites and route it has given me is from Preston up to Lancaster, then across to Long Preston where I change for the S&C train.

I think a few days looking around the internet for a decent spot is called for, as well as doing some uni work of course!

Well my tickets arrived in the post yesterday. I am hopeful of there being a bit of sun on saturday as I am sure the peaks which line the route will be a fine snow capped sight.

    Is anyone else travelling?

Mark(Alberta) and I will be travelling but not sure where from yet!.Had planned to join at Manchester, however, the weather has turned for the worse again, its' snowing quite fast in Wakefield at the moment. We'll see what its' like after tomorrow, don't fancy driving over the Pennines if its' like this, only other option would be Skipton. The S&C should be scenic with all the snow that's come down,a bit like old times.

S&C looked superb yesterday in the snow. Oddly, very little snow along Little North Western. Should be a good trip on Saturday.

I left Hellifield this morning and there was barely any snow on the ground. I work over the border near Blackburn and it has been snowing lightly since 8:30 but it isn't settling. Despite living in Hellifield I am hoping to make the journey to Manchester, even though it is a diesal leg I have never travelled the Manchester to Leeds route. Lets hope we can all make our destination points.

I will be by a window around in Coach H if anyone wants to say Hi!

I spent the last couple of days up around there. When the weather forecast says there will be snow over higher ground, they meant it. There's no snow at all south of Oxenholme, not even south of the station, but there is snow at the north end! Lots of snow up to Penrith, then only a bit up to Carlisle. S&C is basically white until Settle, not much south of there until Skipton. Settle Junc to Carnforth had a very light dusting as of yesterday afternoon. Over Standedge was pretty much a white out too, from what I could see in the darkness.

If you're going to Garsdale you can get a shot from a car park on the East side of the tracks just before the station.

I took THIS one from there.

I am wanting to be nearer the back on the northbound, wanting the classic shot of the loco over the viaduct with a snowy Whernside in the background as well as Penyghent etc so right hand side of the train for me!

Well lets just say at Hellfield the fields are green with no snow since Sunday!! I travelled to Skipton last night and there was a covering in the fields. Looking at a few fotopics sites yesterday though there was plenty of the white stuff up Kirkby Stephen way. I would anticipate with my local knowledge there will be a bit about from Helwith Bridge and plenty on the top of the three peaks but this is only a guess!!! At the moment in Blackburn it is wall to wall blue sky so it looks like we will escape any today meaning at least that I can make it to Manchester for stupid o'clock in the morning.

    Mallerstang ;)

Ingleborough's nicely covered: http://www.ingleboroughwebcam.co.uk/, Kirkby Stephen is too, Penrith had a bit of snow last night - don't know if it extended across the Eden Valley. Ribblehead was plastered earlier in the week - can't think there's been too much to change that.
