The Carnforth pool is notionally six locos strong which ought to be enough to cope with 4 trips a week, Waverley included. It is a tad ironic both failures on the WCRC Dalesman were non WCRC owned locos though.
Quite sure it wasn't planned for 44932 and the 8f to be subject to protracted repairs nor for 35018 to be awaiting completion by the time the programme reached its heaviest.
Nowt wrong with the ambition, just needs workshop resources of equal effort.

Thankfully my knowledge of diesels is so little I have no idea what that means. :)

So how do you plan for unexpected breakdowns, broken springs are sods law and no amount of inspection will detect when it's going to happen. Having a second loco in steam at Carnforth is also a none starter since it would involve the unnecessary heating and cooling cycle, and the cost involved lighting up and having a person on duty all day just to look after it.

It's sort of like comparing a rebuild with Bulleid's originals, only with the boiler design changed too.

Last week there were three different locos used on the Tuesday Dalesman, Wednesday Fellsman and Thursday Dalesman. Plenty of scope there, I would have thought, to keep one loco in steam as stand-by.

Broken springs can occur post ftr, the little north western route might not be in great condition.
The point about a spare loco being a non starter is rubbish for the reasons made above. Additionally 5231 itself was scrambled a few weeks ago when 46115 was failed on shed. Anything is possible it just requires adequate planning.
However, the chosen plan B generally seems to be a diesel.

Anyone know what's likely to haul tomorrow's Dalesman? Given recent problems with 45231, Leander and Galatea my guess is 46115...
