There has been nothing allowed at the western end since the line was duced. However there was some talk about a five being granted permission to work a train west but I don't recall if it happened. The wireing in the tunnels is fixed in the middle and does not zig zag like most of the network and is like this because of clearance.
The down line at the Eastern end is also banned. So the only line that you can use is the up line tunnel. Both lines are bidirectional and both tunnels singled.

Whats to stop the Deltic doing any shunting/manourvering before heading off ?, the Steam Loco woulden't have to do much more than back on then.

Yes, steam is banned from the Mound tunnels at the West end of Waverley due to the height restriction now posed by the overhead wires. However, even the 50's were not allowed West through the Mound when they visited at the end of last year to proceed with a 'Fife Circle' mini tour. Though this wasn't due to the height restrictions, 50's would make it like all other diesels, it's a case that the lines leading West out of the station are so busy to full capacity, that it's difficult to path tours West now at certain times of the day. In this instance, the WCRC 57 on the rear was used to haul the tour East, round the Sub and onto the Fife lines. I suspect this could be the case in July, lines at full capacity leading West to Haymarket so a diesel ( 67 likely ) will need to tie on to the rear of the Elizabethan and drag it to Millerhill yard where Tornado will come on, before 67 hauling tour back in to Waverley for the return.

It would seem there's another stumbling block to this happening - DBS are now operating railtours for Steam Dreams, yet according to another thread when it comes to preserved diesels like D9009 they "no longer have a mechanism for acceptance of private owner locos" which presumably rules it out..

Can anyone confirm if this is true, and if so are the DPS/Steam Dreams aware?

I was sceptical myself, thanks for the confirmation.

Took a while to find this thread, buried several pages in! Anyway, just to advise those of you who are still wondering whether to join this rather good tour that it is now sold out in Premier and First Class and, as at 7.30 last night, there were less than 20 seats left in Standard.

Thats good news, always thought this was a bit of a holy grail of a railtour combining 2 east coast legends.

Hopefully being sold out a month before running might get somebody else to run it in a similar format in the future.

To me its a great combination, deltic, A1/2/3/4..

Regarding the Waverley - Haymarket section, that has been done with steam recently when 5043 arrived on the 26th May, though I suspect it probably comes with about 300 conditions which 99 times out of 100 can't be met.

Tornado also did that section on 22nd May and as far as I was aware no onerous conditions were imposed.

I was wondering if it was something like only a certain tunnel could be used, and when there was a path, or in a certain direction or similar, but I bow to your superior knowledge on the subject.

On the Cath Explorer, one tunnel was used. So whilst steam had access from the west, it was restricted to one line.

Yes steam has indeed been through a few times now since the test run with 46115 back at the end of April, making my previous statement now void.

The conditions set so far is that the engine is now allowed to have tue regulator open or safety valves blowing underneath the Mound Tunnel, and must proceed through 'Track X', which is the 3rd line from the North, when passing through the Mound tunnel.

That's a pain for you - my sympathies - but great news for the promoters. If it's any consolation, I've bought tickets for some of my family, but I'll not be going with them, as I'll be out of the country at work :(

I'm looking forward to hearing about the trip, and seeing the photos/videos in due course, though. Incidentally, has one steam locomotive run all the way south in one day since Blue Peter, back in the 1990s? We know that Tornado's done it northbound, of course, thanks to Top Gear :)
