You can call them obstructions because that is what all forms of train become should they slip to a stop or fail, be they steam, diesel, electric or even hot air powered.

I am new to this but its a shame that the challenges for Tangmere and why it happened, what appears to have been great running by Tornado in the same area and what it will mean for the future is being overtaken by insults from various people.

My 8 year old reads this forum and has asked why people are arguing, but saying that he also calls steam locos kettles which is of no offence to most I would think.

It is the time of year when the DFS adverts appear on the telly, telling us to order our settees in time for Christmas, the operators of wheel lathes book their holidays in the Greek Island of Domestos and people who really ought to know better send random delay minute generators out to bung up the rail network.

Anyone know if the Rail Head Swab Tests have been done yet?

Well don't ever go into a crew cabin on the big railway, or on any heritage railway then, if you are upset by a bit of banter, we are all big boys are we not? (and by the way I have often disagreed with "dragging brakes" in another place).

And the blame culture goes into overdrive

Don't know, but I could probably guess as to the findings

Mud-slinging and blame laying aside, surely it was bloody daft to book a steam locomotive, with a heavy train, to have to stop at the foot of such a steep climb in the middle of November?
Is this not asking for trouble?

If injecting an air of pragmatism into things is classed as being an 'Agent Provocateur' then I shall wear that hat with pride.

Charter trains have to fit in round scheduled passenger, freight and RHTT workings as best as they can. If that means they have to wait at signals to allow other trains to clear the section ahead then so be it. The MDTR does not revolve around charter trains. Nor should it...

What should have occured is that NR and the operator should have looked at the schedule, realised where the problem might potentially be, and put measures in place to prevent it.

I have noticed. Overcharging the brake for one minute normally cures that particular problem...

The problem with that being that the pathing and headway times of the train service may dictate that the charter train has to run at stupid o'clock in order to guarantee clear signals ahead of it. Alternatively you run at a reasonable time of day and put up with day to day train regulation including any service trains running out of course....
