... and a very convenient connection to both the A303 (east/west) and A34 (north / south) at the Sutton Scotney end for car-borne visitors to start from :)

I'd never thought about your suggestion above but I agree - Winchester Chesil was a remarkably central location and just a golf shot from the cathedral grounds. I think land prices would have taken it beyond the reach of preservation schemes at the time though (and the mainline connection to the south over Hockley viaduct would have to be included in our pipe dreaming as well! :)
Tom, what is the state of the old lines that once ran east and west from East Grinstead - could they still be walked by a determined explorer with a camera?

Not very difficult at all - west of East Grinstead it forms the basis of the Worth Way long distance footpath / cycle path; and east as far as Groombridge it forms the Forest Way. There are odd diversions, but much of the infrastructure of bridges, station buildings etc are still obvious, albeit sometimes in private ownership.

"...... the idiocy of the Ministry of Transport, starting with Ernest Marples......." He wasn't an idiot, it was part of his deliberate policy to harm the railway as much as possible IMHO.

Don't forget he and his family owned a large company who built roads, and then when railways closed they somehow ended up with lucrative contracts to replace them with a new roads.............
He did of course recruit Beeching to carry out his policy with relish.
