012bwNatpres.jpg I noticed the train appeared rather empty when it passed me today at Helwith Bridge, not a good sign if these trains are to run in the long term, surely? Either way 45699 seemed in fine fettle, even with the light train. I've attached my approaching shot from today, and on the link below is a further image.

It certainly didn't feel spring like this morning....

Water stop at Hellifield was cut short to enable on time departure. Early arrival at Appleby meant that there was time to fill up completely. Left Carlisle on time absolutely heaving it down...... Load 8 + pob, passenger numbers under 300.

It seems there is a major track problem with trains delayed two hours and sadly the Pendle Dalesman is stuck in the middle of it all.

Noooo. Not me. When I lived in WB I couldn't afford Sands - it was a cup of tea at the Rendezvous. Great days though & the last days of steam at Backworth.

As reported elsewhere the day was not without its problems (not down to steam!). Despite these, or maybe because of them Galatea performed well albeit with a light load. 12 minutes were recouped between Preston and Hellifield. Hoghton summit 27, Wilpshire summit 30, Clitheroe station 41 and Rimington 38 mph.

We left Hellifield RT thanks to a quick water stop. Settle J 64, Settle station 52, Helwith Bridge 34 rising to 40 on the level, Horton in R 33, then settled to 26 with an increase to 30 as we approached Ribblehead station, 29 onto the viaduct falling to 26 - 12 mins early at Blea Moor. 14 early into Appleby, 1 late away but downhill running at 60/61 mph had us 1 early into Carlisle.

RT away from Carlisle speed built to 40 on the 1 in 131. We were stopped at a sig before Plumpton loop and were then not looped as planned speed rose to 44 and we went through Penrith at 57 increasing in the dip to 58. However, brakes were applied and we were turned into the loop at the foot of the 1 in 125. Away again speed was worked up to 44 on the 1 in 125 which increased to 48 past Shap village. On the downhill speed was allowed to increase until we reached 75, brakes applied from time to time. Then came the stop and the news that we were sixth in line being held because of a broken rail at Lancaster; nothing was heading north. We finally got moving and into Carnforth loop where it had been hoped to regain some time with a quick loco change, this was thwarted by the volume of traffic passing on the main line.

Thanks to everyone involved in the tour especially the stewards and WCRC staff who kept us very well informed on what was a difficult day.

Good to meet Ralph, neither of us called the loco correctly.
