On another tack, why would 71000 need to be dragged by a 67 from Southall ?

 

The 71000 crew reckon it is to preserve the engine, which is understandable.

Understandable yes but I still don't like the sound of it.

I agree, surely preferable to the Duke and a garter blue A4? Don't get me wrong, both superb locos but perhaps not together at the head of a charter. <BJ>

 

Much better yes, it would have been the height of indignity to have one of Gresley's masterpieces hidden. I'm a massive fan of the Duke and still remember its legendary Shap Time Trials run in October 95, but paired with an A4 ? No

They will, something tells me there could be a few records broken tomorrow over a certain range of banks west of Newton Abbott. Are figures kept for DH records over gradients generally does anyone know ?

 

Yep, i think so, as in steam railway they said that 5043 and 6201 smashed the shap and grayrigg records...

 

I just wondered whether there are records kept specific to DH combinations as they obviously can't be compared to the SH ones.

 

I think they might be seperate, as it would be a little unfair for them to be together.
Does anyone know of the records for the south Devon Banks?

 

There's rain showers forecast for Hemerdon tomorrow between 12:00 and 15:00, and again at 19:00, (sunshine in between), but these shouldn't affect the train with any luck.

 

Hopefully this will stop the fire risk...

 

71000 was on Barton Hill by the gate this morning in light steam plus another loco further in that I only caught a brief glimpse of as I drove past (typically I had white van man on my tail so couldn't slow down). All I could tell you about the other would be that it was green - and a dark green at that - similar to the colour Tangmere is currently carrying, but I think the tender was more LNER shaped than SR or BR standard. Don't quote me on the last bit - its hard to see much through the gate as you go past and I didn't have a chance to pull in. Someone was there taking photos so some gen might appear later.
