Has there been any suggestion of a steam loco being involved with any reopening ceremony or a private charter of any type? It is due for reopening in March is it not?

Be nice symmetry if 48151 was involved as first steam if so.

DRS class 20's, I'm sure steam will be round it before too long.

The opening of the Todmorden Curve could present the opporunity to run a series of cicular tours from Manchester Vic - Rochdale - Todmorden - Burnley - Blackburn - Bolton - Manchester Vic. Three good climbs - Miles Platting, Copy Pit and Sough. Maybe run 2 or 3 trips a day with circular fares offered from each of the above mentioned stations.

Sounds good Malc, but there is the evr prexent problem of pathing over Sough, yes it can be done but....
Add in the thought of the second run in the opposite direction, with a different loco, and it begins to get interesting.

How about a 'figure 8'? Electric from London to Preston, steam over Copy Pit - Tomorden curve -
Rochdale - Manchester Vic. - Bolton - Sough - Blackburn - Hellifield - Carnforth and 86 back to the smoke, or the opposite way.
    Just a thought.

Sounds good, but what steam mileage would that be, and you need somewhere reasonably in the middle of the steam section for a break.

Is there anywhere to put and service the stock near Manchester Vic ?
and more importantly are there any decent pubs nearby?

Pubs, yes but servicing stock I'm not sure unless it could be done at the Northern depot on the Rochdale line.

    About 125 miles all told.

Do servicing with a break at the ELR.. Its dead season so 500 extra passengers every week would surely be welcome ?
If 47298 was overhauled by then it could be a good pilot loco to take the train back round the triangle right way round at Castleton for departure, or 40145, Deltic etc.

Of course if they used the 100mph class 50, instead of the 86, it could just hang on the back.

Whilst pretty well any new or re-opened bit of railway is welcome, this particular project does raise some questions.

Why did they bother to close the curve when they weren't closing the lines that it connects?

And why wait until it's ready before starting to run trains that won't get quite that far? (The Network Rail News Release http://www.networkrailmediacentre.c...-boost-Lancashire-s-growing-railway-1ed3.aspx says "Once the curve is complete, Manchester Victoria – Rochdale services will be extended to Todmorden with services to Burnley and Blackburn to follow.")

Although the curve is scheduled to open 9th Feb, Copy Pit is closed until 28th March, hence Burnley and Blackburn services to follow....

It was nearly there too in May 2014 when the Tin Bath was postponed twice on account of it. It was a bit irritating to see it in all its rusty, unused glory when the Tin Bath hammered past finally in February 2015. :Rage: Irritation soon gave way to appreciation though as attention returned to the noise from the two Riley 5s as they dug in to the bank. :D
