Graham Ward was driving with Dave Proctor keeping the boiler on the mark. Graham said he used 36% cutoff and wondered where the bank was!!!! By the time the 12th coach dived into the tunnel the GPS showed the speed of the train to be 70.6.

This kind of performance is making most that preceded it from GW and LNER locos seem to be rather ordinary.

My footage of her yesterday. Filmed at Newton St Loe, Whiteball, Waterside near Paignton and Stoke Canon. Enjoy.

Hers my video of Clan Line filmed at Dawlish and Stoke Canon. After sun all morning it was a disapointment to have it cloudy when the train passed. I feared it would crawl through as two stoppers were infront of it but they cleared quickly so 35028 could at least accelerate from the staion through the tunnels..
Stoke Canon was amazing, charging up towards Whiteball.. Clan Line looked and sounded magnificent today.. excellent engine.

I’m running out of superlatives to describe Clan Line. She really is *that* impressive. The second shot is something that’ll live long in the memory. Roll on the Cornishman!

Not doing many trips these days for various reasons. Probably obvious what they are to many on here but was on the version with 46100 two years ago which was superb and luckily was on again yesterday. I cannot think of many better runs behind steam than that with 35028 and the videos on here just confirm all the on train impressions. Many thanks to all the people who can make something like this happen in 2018.

Following on from my post last night, my footage of Clan Line's spectacular run up to Whiteball Tunnel is now available. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did filming it! :)

Oh my word are you sure that's on the ascent of Whiteball - the speed that she is going she may as well be on the descent! A quite incredible speed past the camera.

Gutted to be missing the Cornishman as well...

Stunning performance! I wonder how key 6' 2" drivers are for fast climbing like this. I'd like to see Blue Peter or DoG (and one day the P2) having a crack at Clan Line's time.

I think DOG has done Whiteball southbound at 70, though only with load nine.

With a bit of luck Number Nine will run a couple of Torbays this year, which should be good too.

71000 did it in 18.34 finishing at 68mph with 11 on on 5/8/12. The duke also holds the standing start from Exeter record at 18.58 finishing at 64mph with the same load just 1 month later.

Not sure it makes a lot of difference at speed and it certainly didn't stop Clan Line reaching 103 mph in 1966

Didn't know about the former run, but just on a point of detail, the latter was definitely a September 2010 run. DoG was withdrawn following a failure at Eastleigh while hauling Torbay Express's "Dreaming Spires Express" from Poole to Oxford on 15th August 2012. Not that this really matters, because it doesn't in any way diminish the important inference about the massive potential of a revived DoG to deliver a performance rivalling yesterday's magnificent effort by Clan Line. The thought strikes me that maybe one day we will see something akin to the Shap 1995 Time Trials along the Westbury-Exeter section, when a full line up of 8P competitors becomes available - how brilliant would that be ?? (even if that is a sentiment uttered more in hope than expectation).

Meanwhile we have the Cornishman to look forward to in less than two weeks - when I'm sure we will be reprising the superlatives that are echoing around this thread right now, although I'm expecting it to be a slightly contrasting experience with perhaps a more limited load (Load 10?) in recognition of what would be most sensible over the Devon Banks. Which might, in turn, offer the prospect of an EXD-Whiteball start-to-pass Blue Riband performance with the slightly lighter load, perhaps? We'll see - after yesterday, anything's possible!!

Following late running Weymouth - Bristol TM DMU which lost time at Yeovil PM and was 13' L at Castle Cary then cautioning for suspected cattle on track.

    Cheers, Neil

Not if the train takes water at Tiverton it won't as that's always a possibility. Perhaps we could hope for an interesting time between EXD and PLY but the pathing on that section does rather limit options.
