Just booked on the TE for the 19th August. Will 70000 be ready by then, or will we have DoG?
Also, is Tornado staying at Bristol?

Interesting questions, if only we knew the answers. At a guess, I'd say 70000 will do the 19 August TE as the Duke will need a break by then I expect. That should see another two Brits leaving TM as 70013 should be working the WSE I guess ?

Not sure about Tornado. It's next revenue earning outing appears to be the CE to Scarborough on Saturday 18 August so I guess it might stay in Bristol until then but more likely to go to Southall at the first opportunity I would have thought. That said, it's already been in Bristol a week after completing it's last booked duty so who knows ?

In attempting to answer questions, I seem to have only raised others ? lol

Just heard 71000 leaving WSM from my garden as the rain began falling. Seemed to be about 5 late !

Both trains are recorded on National Rail's "Live Departures" boards interestingly

The two trains passed Claverham, Bristol on time heading west. Both locos sounding good and looking superb.
9 coaches behind the Brit, 11 coaches behind the Duke.

A very good start to the day. <BJ>

Only 11 coaches so anybody any comments on how 71000 performed? No TE next weekend so I can see no reason why the 19th couldn't be 71000 (or 70000 if repairs are complete).

Well I was on board, an absolutely cracking run by the Duke in both directions. On the return run, an on train announcement said that it was thought the Duke topped Whiteball at arround 68 1/2 to 69 mph, and the entry to the tunnel was at 70mph. Given the poor weather on the outward journey, all in all, a very impressive day out.

That is very interesting about the climb to Whiteball. If true, this was very nearly a new record. As far as I know the current record was set by 60009 at the end of February 1995 with a train from Exeter St. Davids to London Paddington which entered the tunnel at 71mph. Incidentally, this train was driven from Exeter as far as Bristol Temple Meads by the legendary Trevor Barnett who just before Whiteball Tunnel had our train overtaking EVERYTHING on the M5 ! How often does that happen these days ?

The person who made the PA, said that the record books would be checked to see where the run fitted in with past performances. There was a traveller who looked well decked out with all the timing paraphernalia, so I guess the answer will be forthcoming at some point!.

Many thanks, that's interesting. Probably be mentioned in Mike Notley's "Top Link" article in Steam Railway, though I can't remember him publishing many TE logs in the past. He tends to concentrate more on the "one off" tours though I didn't see him about on the "Tamar Devonian"

Enquiring about the 19 August TE this morning, I was informed by Hannah Watts that although the locomotive has yet to be finalised it is likely to be either "Britannia" or "Bittern" which came as a bit of a surprise as I hadn't realised 4464 was in the pool. Hope it is 4464 as we haven't seen an A4 on the TE since 60009 in 2005 if I remember rightly ?

Hannah also said the tour is nearly fully booked so this may be one to book on sooner rather than later if this date is appealing above the others ?

I believe Mike said in his column that he could not get there in time by service train from Derby on a Sunday.

Hmmm, I do hope that it's Bittern, as that would be a nice change for the TE, it has only seen standards this year!

Mallard ran with choc and cream stock 1986 to 88 I seem to remember ? It didn't look good it's true, but as we've said before, these trains are run for those travelling, not watching !

Better than Intercity or the dreaded "rainbow rake" , I'd rather a smart inauthentic rake for the loco than a rag tag looking collection.

Is it wrong that I think 4464 would actually look quite good with an Intercity rake...? As long as the rake doesn't have the blue/cream Mk2 on the back, I'm happy!
