    No they wouldn’t but it might get a couple of black marks like that if it had to buffer up to stock tender first.

    I think it’s all rather immaterial, I’ve just seen some rather interesting footage of a GW King at Leamington with the tender lined out but no GW or BR markings on it but with a smoke box number plate, there is no cut and dried period of ‘everything was like this’ 7816 in the late 1960’s being a great example

    That's a bit unfair on Tornado's two minders that day. They took the opportunity when recessed at Middlesborough in the morning to clean the buffers after the tender first run from York. A similar opportunity did not present itself in the afternoon after running round the support coach in Tees Yard. The view you are commenting on was taken at Eaglescliffe on the final leg home to York from Tees.
