I think you will find that there is a world of difference between the average steam fan and the juvenile antics of some diesel freaks.

Not convinced - the decapitation score is steam 1, diesel 0.

Meanwhile, there is a basic matter of courtesy. Northern are doing this with the locals in mind, and this may be flooded by non-locals to the detriment of those locals - the self same local population who helped ensure that we still have an S&C to be repaired today. Northern, as hosts, have stated a condition. Whether we agree or disagree with it, when someone goes out of their way to do something I benefit from, but asks a reasonable favour, I think it's reasonable to respect the request. No more, no less.

I think there was a recent fatality on a diesel hauled service train recently. As far as the second point is concerned it should have been obvious to Northern what would happen when they advertised steam for the price of a normal ticket, as a publicity stunt this may backfire on them big time.

What you seem to be suggesting is that they shouldn't have tried to do something nice because they should have known that steam enthusiasts would turn up and ruin it. Is that right?

I don't believe Northern ever said these trains were solely for locals. Do the maths. Population of Skipton, Settle, KS and Appleby 22k. Seats on offer maybe 5k. That's not going to work is it. I think one of their aims is to show the S and C is open (or will be soon), and another is to give something back to local traders.

I don't yet think it's a given that the story will turn into 'Hundreds turned away at Skipton and Settle.'

Maybe they could have run a scheme for the locals --clip two tokens from the Craven Herald or Westmorland Gazette and get your tickets from Appleby, Settle or Skipton station before general booking opens. That raises the costs for these blasted incomers.

@1020 Shireman -- are you still confident Tornado is going to be on the front southbound?

Anyone got any spare Mark 2 coaches?

As a 'selfish outsider' who is planning on 'hijacking' these trips for my own personal enjoyment I am really looking forward to these trips. I will endeavour to keep all my limbs in order and will try and not to offend any locals or push any small children off the train.

After reading these last few pages I am really not sure where the biggest risk lies to mainline steam is; the outside or within.

Anyway, does anyone have any idea of how the preparations are going? The weather looks set to turn colder next week, with chance of snow and frost. Could be some classic S & C conditions!

Direct quote from Northern from the facebook chat.

This is true, there are reservations left on some services, though others went much quicker.
The services are intended for local people, as way of saying thank you for their patience while the line has been closed following the landslip at Eden Brows in February 2016

The Rodelblitz is a damn good thrash and amazing value for money and any "no standing rule" would be laughed at. :)

Well that may well be the case. It seems that in true Nat Pres tradition, one of the most surprising TOC/heritage steam partnerships on one of the most famous lines in the country has somehow been turned by a minority into a gripe about rolling stock, booking arrangements, on-train rules, possible overcrowding and disgruntled locals who may have to fight to share what space there is on the trains with selfish enthusiasts touting cameras and microphones. And I think I have also read some scepticism about whether Tornado will actually be at the front of its train in each direction.

You couldn't make this kind of stuff up. Well, thinking about it, you probably could!

The locomotive will be on the front of the train in each direction.

Big Al, I couldn't agree with you more. Something fantastic is happening yet the overwhelming noise and comments on various forums are from people finding something to moan about. Hey ho, I have my seat reserved on each and every train.

I'm delighted this is happening, and think it's a great idea that deserves to succeed. It does occur to me that a little 'family hold back' may be in order for those it's aimed at to get a fair crack at it, and that if Northern have put conditions on, it is only polite to respect them.

So are you suggesting that only posts of fawning praise should be posted in this thread?
Yes it's a great event for all lovers of steam and hats off to everyone involved but nevertheless you can't expect people not to comment on all the issues involved.

Oh no you didn't, Nortons were the choice of Rockers not Vespas.
