If it's a public footpath you have every right to be there but not to wander all over the field.
We had this problem years ago most people keep to the path but occasionally you have to ask people not to wander about in the field.
As to some farmers not being so accomodating maybe they are fed up with people wandering about at will.
It is nice to be asked.

    Cheers Dave

From memory I don't think there is a public footpath crossing the field. The last time I was in that area I don't think you can get a very good photo from out side the railway fence line. There is too much undergrowth covering your view of the line.

Just to refresh peoples memory there is NO public footpath or access to this area . We have asked to use the field on charters but to no avail ..... However here is Tornado working the 11.55 Alton Alresford through Chawton Woods today.

Led to believe a few photographers did trespass in the sheep field at Chawton woods today. There was a pole attached to the front of Tornado today. Asking someone in the know this pole had a microphone on the top. A company is making a sound recording for sound chips to go in to model railway Tornado locos.

An urgent warning to photographers - however - as the incidence of Schmallengburg virus is making sheep farmers ultra-cautious and it may be politic to avoid any area with sheep in. This virus has appeared virtually out of nowhere within the last 4 weeks and can cause upto 50% mortality rate on lambs hence the farmers' concerns.

THank you for postng this picture.I was hoping to see Tornado on the MHR on 18th Feb , but due to various commitments was no longer able to do so when the running date was put back by a week. I felt rather miffed when I realised what a lovely day it was going to be on Sat 25th. However, seeing from your picture that it was running with a headboard on Saturday (and worse still on Sunday by all accounts!) I feel much happier and glad I didn't waste the time and petrol.

I know the location for the high shot so is the farmer who owns these fields photographer friendly?

I do hope some photographers leave the pole and mic in, it's a photographic record of something a bit different, airbrushing it out is like deleteing a bit of history because it doesn't suit your opinion.
This of course is only my opinion.

I presume anyone videoing would have a hard time removing the broom like object! We shouldn't get into the whole "how much photo editing is it allowable" thing. Generally I try not to go for straight "record" shots, though I have my share of them. My pictures from Saturday were better anyway as I mucked up my settings on Sunday, and on Saturday - no microphone!

As a farmer myself, I can only agree with the above. I have no problem with folk using the footpaths on my farm but straying among livestock is not wise. The very fact of having a right of way means I already restrict the type of animals I graze in those fields (avoiding putting the sucklers there because of a number of high profile "cattle trampling" cases!) and the third party insurance adds about £1200 to my annual costs, access is far from "free" but it is the farmer who pays the cost!

The current outbreak of Schmallengburg virus is a great worry to many of us with ovines and bovines because so little is known about it. Those of us who suffered during the foot & mouth outbreak still have raw memories of the carnage caused and the petty tantrums of some ramblers who were denied access at that time.... So, please, humour the struggling land-owner, particularly in the south-east where this problem seems to be worst (at the moment!).

BTW, the wreath was carried by 60163 as a tribute to Malcolm Crawley who died a week ago.

Let's hope the chips sound right then when the model is travelling quickly so the model sounds near on as to the real thing! The sound chipped steam loco's created thus far sound to slow for how fast the model travels, fingers crossed that they get it right!

As far as I am aware great effort is made to 'sync' the sound of the chip to the movement of the loco so that you get the right number of 'chuffs' per revolution - perhaps it is that visually it doesn't look right despite it being right? Much the same as how when you look at a model doing a scale 80mph you'd guess it was closer to 50 (at least I do...)

Lee, I hope the loco lads don't mind you calling our MPD "Ropey" I could only be out briefly yesterday and missed most of the sun, although did get a few nice shots of Wadebridge

Now that's interesting, a company asked for some sound recordings of mine a while back for a 60163 train simulator.

This field is used for cows sometimes so out of bounds then as should any fields with livestock at any time. It also used to be used by the local model airoplane club . However I have never heard of anyone having any problems in this one. its the other side of the A31 and I think the Sheep guy only rents that particular field so its not his land to " Get Orff" but as I have witnessed he is very protective and even when contacted by charter photographers is not helpfull.
Its a land owners own right regarding access however .
