It's also rather amazing in the tin, now the fun starts of learning all about it and how to operate it and maintain it. Hats off to the team I must say.

i know this is slightly off topic but I wonder who will be the first railway to do a "New Builds Gala"?? Eventually you will have 82045, 72010, 84030, 60163, 45551, 6880, 1014, B17 and 2999.

Would be one hell of a gala and one hell of a cost and probably some years until it happens.

Until recently I might have thought that such a "new-builds" gala as suggested would be the thing of dreams; I think that, from today, such a dream may be closer to reality. It's early days for Tornado of course but those involved with the other "new builds" must surely take heart from what we have seen today. Some, such as 6880 and 32424 are well under way, as is 2999, whilst 82045 (my personal favourite) is coming along now. Some of these new locomotives will enhance our heritage railways in the years to come, I've no doubt about that and I think more people now know about steam locomotives today than they did yesterday thanks to Tornado, which can only be a good thing. There is a thread on this site about the "Golden Years". Perhaps we shall see another stage now. I will be investing more in steam locomotives than I will in airlines that's for sure! As for Tornado, its supporters can enjoy the day that we have all waited for. Perhaps HMS Nelson's motto (wrong loco I know!) might be appropriate, "Let him bear the palm who has earned it".

The phrase o b****r springs to mind.

Getting back on topic. Well done to all the lads and everyone who has contributed in one way or another towards this 20 year project.
It will be fantastic to see her racing up the East Coast with a uniform rake of Blood and Custard Mk1s while crossing 60007 with another uniform rake of BnC coaches.

Hi i'm new. Earlier I was watching Sky News and a news report was on about Tornado. I think that it looks great and can't wait to see it doing 90 MPH on the ECML.

I'm sure all those who have contributed and been involved with the locomotive must be feeling pretty proud at the moment.

I like the comment concerning the chimney. 90 times more carbon emissions than a small car....
On the SVR we have been told to watch our carbon footprint i.e. keeping the smoke down and trying to keep a clean exhuast as much as possible.

The Daily Mail has the same stuff on their website. Is it owned by the same company?

It is. Most of the photos they used were Press Association ones, which can get picked up by any of the UK's papers and potentially any newspaper around the world, which could of course give the Tornado guys a good bit of publicity!

Things must be improving in the world of journalism - in the articles I've seen about the A1, they managed not to refer to it as "a train" or call it "The Tornado"!

    Regards

    Andrew
