I'm glad that I don't have to make a "call" on that one as there's a classic example of an argument with two sides.

How come the boiler needs to go back to Germany again?!

Green five said MAY go back to Germany so until it's official I wouldn't worry about it.

That would make sense from an operational point of view, why limit your option for work ?.

At a guess, we have limited experience with welded boilers of that size may have a bearing on thinking ?.

Fair doos. Im just wondering if that makes it about the same timing between construction and its last visit for remedial work and its last dispatch till now? Bout 2.5 years each, if so would be something thats periodical. Surely must be expensive to send it all the way back just for maintanance... I'll leave it to those that know more to educate me on that one tho.

From the A1SLT website: "Tornado has been withdrawn from ‘The Cathedrals Express’ tour on Saturday 23rd November 2013. During our usual examination and monitoring procedures it was identified that we would need to replace two firebox stays ahead of the next operation. Due to their location it is not possible to complete this work in the time before the run. Tornado was due to enter winter maintenance at Barrow Hill on Monday 25th November and this will take place as scheduled. Tornado will be deputised on ‘The Cathedrals Express’ by Britannia. We apologise for the disappointment that this will no doubt bring to those who were looking forward to travelling with Tornado on this occasion. Keep an eye on www.a1steam.com for Tornado’s 2014 tours."

I believe the boiler may have been booked for a trip to Meiningen anyway, they turned it round very quickly last time.

If it's just the two stays as reported by Foxhunter, a return to Germany would seem excessive but who knows what's in the contract with Meiningen?

maybe it's part of the boilers warranty to be done by the manufacturers ?

Those stays just don't seem to stay put do they ?

Hmm, confused dot com................................................ the statement says winter maintenance, BUT she's due her intermediate, SOoooooo is it just maintenance being carried out at Barrow Hill, and the intermediate being done elsewhere, OR is the wording in the statement wrong? As it would seem rather a waste of time and resources to do one then the other........................... and finally, if the intermediate is being done at Barrow Hill, do we assume that any "major" bits that may need doing are done by people on West Coast's wish list?.................................

Well I guess we have found out where her new home is then.............? I thought perhaps she would come to the MHR again after she had a lot of maintenance work done at Ropley once before.
The article in HR says that if 60163 didn't pick up any extra bookings after the 23rd November trip she would be stripped down for overhaul. So with the new situation arising I guess she will go for overhaul but how will she get to Barrow Hill if she is unfit to steam?

    Magic Carpet? Lol!!

Though more seriously,I would assume, probably dragged by a b b b box..................................

Something tells me though, that the choice of Barrow Hill, a, strategic for reasons hypothesized about viz a viz West Coast..... and b, to keep her in the public eye as I'm sure that she will be visible sans boiler or not and Joe Public will be able to see the overhaul progress on a weekly basis, and it also gives the trust the opportunity to have the sales stand there as well!

Not sure its an ideal place for a Boiler lift unless thats going back out by rail, Lots of dips and low bridges on the roads round there.o_O
Presuming that between the Roundhouse and DRS the required lifting gear and workshop facilities are available ?

Plus a major and quite an important factor I'd say with the work being carried out at Barrow Hill is its a dam site closer than Southall or Ropley for the staff of the A1 Trust.

Still along way from "home" in Darlington.. has the works there become a distant memory for Tornado now ?

Is space at Darlington being set aside for the P2 build? If so, doing the A1 elsewhere would make
    sense.

It rather looks that way, now that they have the name plates, and I assume there's just not enough space to build one and overhaul the other....................... does this mean the P2 frames are imminent?

Has the works in Darlington got mainline rail access?? That will obviously have an effect along with all the required lifting equipment, on hand at BH when needed so therefore not having to hire in cranes for lifting etc.

    Now according to Google:

Darlington to Barrow Hill - 1 hr 45 mins (103 miles)
    Darlington to Southall - 3hrs 59 mins (250.5 miles)
    Darlington to Ropley - 4hrs 41 mins (285.2 miles)

I know what wins for me so I could travel there and back in a day!
