Thanks for the reply lil Bear! Now I am trying to remember if Bittern has this on the firemans side??? Anybody able to help out??
So if they are positioned on the Fireman's side on LNER locos, does this mean the Fireman operates them?

Since the overhaul at the MHR, Bittern now has its drain cocks under the control of the driver. The old Gresley design of bowden cable operated drain cocks on the firemans side has been replaced by steam operated ones on the drivers side.

When I had my improvement turn on the B1, after arriving in Goathland one trip I was asked to opened and close them. So yes, with driver instruction.

Can anyone explain why they trotted out 'Tornado' in it's UNDERCOAT?.

With the world press looking on,you would have though it would be presented in the top coat. The press will certainly not be back to see it when finished.

I've heard several people say,why grey. It's a very 'visual' thing and the public like results first time round.

The first London Routemaster appeared before the press in red,a thing we come to expect.

I guess its in grey because its not finished - it didnt even have its banjo dome. I expect when it hauls its first mainline trip it will be named on departure and will be in its new coat of paint, and this will be when they get the media back. Having it lined out in apple green departing from a london terminus will be a good photo opportunity and will emphasise that it is now 'finished'.

Quite simple if you take a few seconds to think about it, if you've spent a few thousand pounds painting the locomotive and making it look absolutely stunning...what happens when you then find that there are a few things that still need tinkering and repairing requiring the removal of some of the cladding.

I'll tell you what happens, you make a mess of the paint!

I've no idea why you sound so outraged, it was not at all an uncommon practise for new locomotives to leave the shops in a "Photographic Grey" finish.

I'd have said that not only is it an eminently sensible idea for practical reasons (as outlined above) but that it is a nice nod to a long established tradition.

The picture I have at work of King George V shows it in photographic undercoat. It looks magnificent - and back then the publicity would have been very important, as the GWR were pulling a one-upmanship on the Southern's Lord Nelsons, so if its appropriate then, it certainly is today with Tornado. She looks stunning in grey - especially in a B&W picture. Also it give an heir of "first glimpse" where its almost done - makes people think they are fortunate to see it when its newer than new..... if you know what I mean!

Likewis LMS 6200 The Princess Royal - the first of Stanier's new order to enter traffic and the most prestigious engine the Railway owned - appeared in grey for exhibition at Euston on 28th June 1933. I think it was still grey when it ran a demonstartin press run on 23rd July, and infamously limped into Crewe with a hot box, but I'm open to correction on that.

One A4, 4489 I think, ran briefly in service still in workshop grey so there's already a precedent for 60163 to do similarly.

Yes,I shall look forward to seeing the car shows in the future, all in grey...the latest Routemaster, when built for London, without it's usual red.etc,etc.

The press rarely come back for second helpings, they have other things to do-the world moves on.

Yes, and of course there are SO MANY new steam engines being built that the press won't be able to find two minutes to cram Tornado in........ ](*,)

What you should consider is that the press have been more than once already, and i fully agree that when mainline operations start, a further press opportunity will occur.
It will probably be on the same scale as when 4472 returns, that is the scale of the achievment by the trust and its volunteers.

Giving the A1ST ability to get the press together, and gain maximum use of them (in a positive sense), they will return i suggest.

The publicity gained for all of the preservation movement this weekend, is on a scale not seen in a long time, comments about the temporary livery, after a perfectly reasoned explanation behind it has been given make you sound a fool.

We are discussing a fine locomotive engineering project here, not a poxy bus or car!!!

Scots Guardsman was 'trotted out' in a mixture fo colours as has been said in order to do final checks before the finishing off.... Makes sense.

I thought that the grey was a brilliant move - there's no better way to emphasise that the loco is brand new.

One would have hoped that it was the main steam valve that was attached to the boiler, and that the dome was bolted to the cladding - if you want to be pedantic!

Certainly I have no interest at all in a drab gray loco - but when it turns green and starts to pound the main line - then you're talking!

Im with you on that one 5596-great piece of engineering that will really come alive once out of it's pyjamas and onto the mainline.
Already I've had to explain to a lot of people-it's only the undercoat.See what I mean.

    Careful lads,remember your blood pressure.

Congratulations to all the backstairs boffins & engineers that have truly put together a magnificent work of art for generations to appreciate.Three cheers...
