Why can I see it in grey for its first Main Line run? \:D/

Can't wait for the videos to see it blasting along the GC.

You wont see it on the mainline in grey, as has already been said, once all testing is succesful at the GCR, it will then transfer to YORK, for final painting then dedication, followed by some main line tests for covenantors. These are proposed between York and Newcastle.

Was a piece on Tyne Tees news tonight about its transfer to the GCR, as the construction episode finishes, the operation and maintenance story starts.

Can I just confirm that all tests on both the GCR and the main line will be in grey.

Her painting into LNER apple green with British Railways on the tender will take place at the NRM in York after the completion of all tests and trials.

Only then will Tornado haul her first main line passenger train which will be for our covenantors.

Mark: May I ask a question about the all-welded boiler and firebox?

Did the German manufacturers offer you their view/regime as to how one looks after an all welded unit in day to day service? ie the warming , use, and cooling cycle? Have you drawn up your own guidelines?

I ask because I understand that a welded boiler/firebox requires somewhat different treatment to the more traditional design we are used to in the UK.

    Just interested.

    Thanks

T3 Thank you very much for posting these photos! A wonderful sight! Fortunately I live not too far from the GCR so must have a look at the real thing sometime soon! If it looks this good now, just how good will it look once running in "full colour"?!

Fab shots - I may be missing something here, but can someone tell me what the remaining 66k that is still required to finish off Tornado is for? Is it for the final Paint job and the OTMR?

Having been fortunate enough to be given a guided tour of Tornado by a couple of trust members last night (at midnight no less) I'd just like to add my voice to the general chorus of approval and say that I found it very strange to see a complete locomotive with absolutely none of the usual signs of decades and decades of "percussive maintenance" and heavy rebuilds. All the panels are smooth, every part of the motion unblemished, each piece of wood unmarked . . .

The A1 Trust members are rightly proud of this locomotive, and I cannot wait to see it doing what Mr Peppercorn intended it to do.

Thanks for those interesting pictures. Does Tornado have no vacuum brakes, or am I confusing the hoses on the front of the loco? It looks to me like there are the two air brake hoses, and a steam heating hose, or am I confusing hoses?

The hose above the buffer-beam is a vacuum hose, so I assume it does have means of applying a vacuum brake, even if it does not have a vacuum brake on the engine or tender. It is unusual for a large tender engine to have steam heat on the front as in normal service there would be no need, however it is one of the things many preserved railways add because they do tender first running far more that used to be done.

Thank you Baldric. I did wonder if I was confusing hoses. I've obviously looked at too many 'mixed traffic' pacifics of the Southern Region, which have front end steam heat.
    Thanks,
    Daniel
