To do that you need to place the valve in the middle position to prevent steam being admitted to either side of the piston. I doubt that was possible with the valve seized in the bore.

70000 has worked on one cylinder before. Bit easier to fix the offending valve in mid position when it's on an outside cylinder though.

Didn't Green Arrow drop its middle con rod a few years ago, and then limp on with two cylinders after the crew had safely secured it? Or did I dream it?

I seem to recall that it was replaced with the one from 60886, which had fortunately survived.

Perhaps the footplate crew and support crew gave it a go to see if 60163 could move the train on with two out of three valves under control. And it couldn’t move the train.

I don't think so. I was on the Ebor Flyer and there was no attempt to move Tornado until the diesel hooked up.

Funnily enough the only two V2s I ever travelled behind, possibly why it stuck in my mind.

I can't see NR agreeing to that in any case; they would need to block all running lines before the crew could wander around on the tracks. Access to the inside motion without a pit would also be difficult.

Just back from NVR Wansford. Tornado stands outside the loco' shed with front outside cylinder covers removed ,all three valve cover off.Couldn't see the back of the cylinders /valve ,but valve gear /side rods still in position ,so back covers all most certainly still on. See photo attached.

You can just make out the bottom of the wheel under the steel beam, so it is there.

Trailing wheels look to be in place, difficult to see, but appear to be visible behind the RSJ lying on the ground. I'd have thought the tender would have been split from the loco to release the wheelset unless the NVR has a wheel drop lurking in a shed somewhere.

Not a lot of point in hurrying, until the current partial steam ban finishes they won't be able to do a loaded test run

If they have it'll be news to them! Mind you, as the NVR has the advantage of being both rail-linked and directly accessible from the A1 it would make a good Poorly Pacific Hospital! :D

Is it worth sending her somewhere damp to get a bit of Running in, East Lancs ? Boness or Aviemore perhaps...?

If you're looking for a damp place, it may necessitate a long journey. The dry weather is affecting not only much of this country but parts of the continent too. In Poland they've stopped using steam at Wolsztyn, so I believe because of the dry weather. Japan may be a good option at the moment. .

The simple option, in my view, would be to send her to the Bluebell for running in. They are still running a 100% steam service and it would make up for the cancellation of it's visits.
