The A4 boiler is now at the Science Museum store at Wroughton. It was rumoured during the last year that Jeremy Hoskins wished to purchase it as a spare for Bittern.

I believe that Leeds is an access only by ticket now?

It can't be too long before nearly every railway station on the network will become access by ticket only.

Forgot to ask how easy is it to gain access to the these platforms that have ticket barriers install on them? Are station staff willing to let us on to these platforms just to take a few photos or do you have to buy a rail ticket or a platform ticket?

    Thanks

I cannot comment on the policy of Northern but I imagine if you have a quiet word to the gateline staff you may be allowed through. Their website has a detailed section on gates and it does mention platform tickets.

Has this recently changed? There were certainly non-travellers photographing the SSE last summer at Leeds.

Platform tickets may still be available from the ticket office. From an "anti fare evasion" point of view it is probably best not to advertise a 10p gate pass! Manned checks were in operation last year and passengers wishing to buy SSE tickets were allowed through without a problem.

Chester has had barriers for some time but the station staff have always been brilliant at letting me and my 4 year old son onto the platform without a platform ticket (we have offered to buy some before) to have a look around, take pics etc. That said, Chester isn't anywhere as big or busy as Leeds and it was usually during quite quiet times. Still credit where credit is due - I suppose it depends on the station, how busy it is and who is on duty at the barriers.

Don't know why it wasn't used in the end (would have only been the frames anyway I think? Think the body was rotten - the last time I saw it was about 10 years ago near Marley Hill ay the Tanfield Railway - is it still there?).

If I remember rightly, the 2nd tender for Bittern (ex 4472) was finished and was taken to the Butterley for use with 6233 (think it was even painted LMS Crimson Red?) - don't think it's ever been used but I'm fairly certain there was a picture in Steam Railway (or was it an April Fool and I didn't notice.....)

AFAIK Leeds (City) has always been a closed station (well at least since 1956!), requiring a ticket of some sort to gain access. The new ticket machines have simply replaced the ticket inspectors at the barriers. I don't know about platform tickets; the last time I purchased one it cost me 1d!

Ive seen pictures of a second tender in BR Green for 60019, is this not the same tender that 4472 had in the 1970's (or is there a second spare LNER tender going around ?), but if this was the tender from 4472 and was restored for 60019, then It couldnt have been more costly to restore than building a new one ? Or else 60019 would have also have a second "new" one too ?.

but either way Ive still not seen this second tender behind 60019 do anything.. yet ?
Whilst rambling about tenders I understand from another article that the tender behind 60009 is an A$ pretender as well, I read it was actually the from the 4-6-4 experimental locomotive and has different wheels to other A4 tenders... anyone confirm this ?

Theres an article on the SNG website about A4/A3/W1 tenders. Go to http://www.sirnigelgresley.co.uk/frame.html and via Chime - Archive - A Tangle of Tenders.

Without rereading the whole thing I seem to recall that the W1 tender is behind Union of South Africa, which it gained after withdrawal when the tender it carried to withdrawal went to Flying Scotsman as the water carrier. The water carrier tender frames went initially from sitting rusting by the side of the Tanfield to Tornado, and later back to Flying Scotsman, where a new water carrier body (but to Mk 1 profile rather than A4 tender profile) was built, before being hired out to PRCLT, where it was indeed painted marroon, sat in the shed at Butterly and did, IIRC, sod all. From there I think Jeremy Hosking bought it when FS was being sold, and it was sent somewhere to be painted green and used as Bittern's second tender. I know it did a mainline test run with Bittern just after the restoration was finished, but I haven't heard of it since then.

Bittern has the tender it was built with (albeit modified to a Corridor tender, where it was originally non-corridor).

SNG has a Corridor tender originally from an A1, but the one it was withdrawn with nevertheless.

Flying Scotsman has another A1 corridor tender.

Mallard has an original non-corridor tender, albeit not the one it flew down Stoke Bank with, although replated as such.

Dwight D Eisenhower has the non-corridor tender it was withdrawn with

Dominion of Canada has the corridor tender it was withdrawn with.

Hasnt the 2nd tender not been used with Bittern as it obstructs the rear mounted aerials used for TPWS etc...

Also seen mention that it had locked its wheels too easily on a brake test, possibly flat spotting them.

    Hope this helps.
