Tornado

Along with lots of others, I went to Offord Crossing between Huntingdon and St. Neots. There are a couple of pictures on my Fotopic site :

Hi,
Managed to dash out and grab a shot of her at Three Counties. Not the best spot for a train at this time of day but better than no shot at all and is she'd been on time I would have been at work anyway. Hope your children like the pic.

 

Well I certainly do! I see that she'd been relegated to the slow line by then. She was on the fast at Offord.

First, Tornado screaming through with her chime whistle blowing, followed immediately with a 91, horn blowing too. It couldnt have been timed better!

I am just about to post my pictures in the Talesman thread as it seems more appropriate

 

I was most fortunate to see Tornado come thundering through Grantham this morning, on time. Thank you to all who made this possible; it was an awesome sight to see an A1 on the ECML on its way to the Capital and one no doubt many thought would never happen again in our lifetime. As I never saw an A1 "the first time round" I'm even more grateful!

 

Could the Trust have a copy of this please?

Britain turned back the clock almost 50 years as a £3 million steam train chugged into London.
The Tornado, the first mainline steam locomotive to be built in this country for nearly five decades, steamed from Darlington to London's Kings Cross at the end of a week in which Britain's modern-day rail services have been severely disrupted.
The apple-green engine, which was built with donations from enthusiasts over 18 years, pulled the Talisman train into London half-an-hour later than expected due to electrical problems near Peterborough.
Stopping to pick up passengers in York - and to refill its water tanks there, in Retford and in Peterborough Yard - the steam train took more than six hours to complete the 250-mile route.
The journey was far longer than the regular 8am train operated along the same route by National Express East Coast, which was delayed by seven minutes and took less than half the time.
Hundreds of onlookers, many of whom had been waiting for more than two hours, crowded platform one at Kings Cross as the first steam train to enter the capital in more than 40 years arrived.
Passengers cheered and waved as the steam filled the roof of the station.
Many of its 500 passengers said they were delighted that they had chosen style over speed.
John Warren, one of the first people to step off the train, said the engine was "absolutely phenomenal" and that more steam trains should be running on our tracks.
Built by a team of volunteers over nearly 20 years the A1 60163 Tornado is the 50th Peppercorn class A1 locomotive all of which were designed to cope with the heaviest passenger trains on the East Coast Main Line.
The train, which is expected to become "as legendary as the Flying Scotsman and Mallard", can reach a top speed of 100mph and will enter traffic on the nation's main line network on April 18.

 

Im most bemused by the last sentence - "...will enter traffic on the nation's main line network on April 18."

Evening everyone,

My heavily-pregnant wife, my young son, and I waited on a snowy Huntingdon Station platform with eager anticipation, she came through about 37 down, but the sight was well worth it, well done to everyone who helped create this masterpiece.

There's things you do for money and there's things you do for the love of it and passing on a pic to a fellow steam group is one you do for love. People have been good enough to provide BBLS with gratis pics of 34081 over the years so it would be a sad day if I couldn't do likewise for the A1 boys.

 

That just about sums up the public awareness of the heritage railtour industry. Plenty of inward publicity, but very few people outside the preservation scene are aware that there are so many steam locos running on the national network.

 

Something I've not seen mentioned.
What is the significance of the green painted weight on the screw coupling?
