News latest is that A1 "Tornado" will be available for viewing by the general public from around 11.30am until its departure time at 12.15pm. (However, MOSI stresses that this may be subject to change due to any unforseen changes that may occur stemming from Network Rail or The Royal Train operation)

The viewing time is only a short window but "Tornado" will be right by the main gate in the platform for ease of viewing, actually visible from Lower Byrom Street.

"Planet", fresh from winter maintenance will also be in steam in the Powerhall Yard area. Visit to see "Tornado" but also take the opportunity to see "Planet" ex works and freshly painted by Railway Volunteers (mostly couretesy of "504") "Agecroft No.1" will also be on display inside the powerhall, showing off work recently undertaken by Railway Volunteers.

    Just a thought

Is it possible that Tornado has eclipsed Scotsman and is now the most famous locomotive in Britain ?

I think it would be in the top 3 TBH. When I ask non entusiasts which engines they've heard of the top answer is usually Scotsman, Mallard or Tornado

good point maybe but scotsman not helped by the fact its not in the public eye at the moment. if it were running and was going to do a KX-Edinburgs trip or a royal train then i think it would be scotsman. could also ask the same question of Mallard. Tornado pretender to the throne lol. it'll look fab when you have an A1, A2, A3, A4 all together!

Yes, I'm shallow - I'll admit it. But I would like to talk livery.
Wouldn't it be great to see all four line up in apple green? Maybe Bittern could do the honours as "Golden Eagle" or perhaps even as herself. She's already been blue, grey, silver and brunswick green in preservation.

You set me thinking has Scotsman ever hauled the Royal Train. I have no idea, but I hope someone can say if it has. The date and route would also be interesting if anyone knows.

I believe Scotsman hasn't pulled the Royal Train. That honour has gone to Edward I, Tornado and Sutherland (twice, I think)

It hauled the Queen Mum to open North Woolwich museum in 1984. Pullman stock, no royal crest.

Other 'Royal' engines still around include 60007 and 5051, both before presevation of course. I suspect some others might qualify as well, did Royal Scot ever pull the Royal Train?

If my memory serves me correctly Lambton Hetton & Joicey Collieries No.29 and the NER J27 No.68594 hauled a Royal train for the opening of the NYMR.
