Why can people NOT WAIT until the A1 people have had a chance to tell their own supporters about the problems, IF ANY, that really exist. I am personally getting cheesed off with the way this forum is degenerating into snide backstabbing comments regarding the locomotive and its components. GIVE IT A REST!!!

Whatever decision the A1 Trust makes, should not be up for scrutiny in the way described above. Let the A1 Trust tell their covenators and supporters first, hear their side of the story, and then (if you must) bring out the criticism.

For the record, taking the boiler back to the manufacturer for rectification is no different to anything else we buy/sell/etc in this world, surely?

My vote is that its time for a moderatorial blue pencil... this topic is getting both very negative (bordering on destructive) and potentially libellous...

As has been suggested by a number of posters already and one of the mod team can members take a step back until the A1 Trust make an announcement as to any further news, good or bad, regarding work needed on the boiler.

    Thanks, Neil.

Its unsubstantiated garbage like this that lets this forum down...

When the time and place is relevant, the trust will let people aware of their findings, and decisions.

Until then, rumour monging, third hand snippets etc.., do nobody any good..

Well excuse me, if I had known there would be such comments I would not have asked for clarification of the term used, as far as I'm concerned if there is some rectification needed then back to the manufacturer it should go, I don't think its any fault of anybodies, I just wondered what the fault was exactly and was asking if anybody knew. to me sending things back for remedial work is normal practise and I certainly don't expect anything manufactured to be able to perform faultlessly forever. I was an engineering apprentice at 15, what I learned is that if something can go wrong it sometimes will go wrong, as for all the lynch mob opinions aired here, they may be made after a few cans of brew or like the monty python sketch where they try to out do each other about having lived in a shoe box on the motorway.
for their opinions I am not responsible.
Now then, does anybody know what the score is with tornado or not, if not, fine.
obviously eventually it'll be known, and I aint gonna bother reading all the previous.......

Bit harsh guys, especially with the semi litiginous nonsense. If people had less time and more patience this forum would be very, very quiet and i don't recall anyone blaming anyone else for anything.
So theres a problem, so one way or another its going to get fixed. Tornados performances have been faultless (apart from a bad coal incident that similarly did for another railtour) and the trust is doing the neccesary to make sure that remains so. Theres no secrecy, just bear in mind that information like everything else with 60163 is managed carefully,
that reminds me its two hours before me bedtime so im due back at mill as soon as father as killed us

it is perhaps a shame to blunder into a thread , drop quite a substantial allegation and refuse to do any research to back the comment up and than wonder why people take umbridge

A quick look at the A1 website http://www.a1steam.com/index.php?opt...ews&Itemid=123 will clarify further and no the boiler isn't going back to Germany .

Needless to say this thread has now attracted reported posts . There has been some interesting stuff although imo the anti german postings are somewhat unnecessary . Why do we revel in someone else's perceived failure ?

I just wonder what people get out of bashing Tornado. All I've heard since she was finished is either of the two extremes - praise for the Trust, and the incredible, incredible work they've done, or scorn and somewhat unbelievable amounts of "I told you so" or "I hope it" with regards failing.

Me personally, I pay my once a month covenator's donation, get my newsletter, and sit here hoping an engine my late grandfather would have given anything to see, gets back onto the mainline as soon as possible.

Right just to let everyone know the topic was locked for a short time while the moderation team discussed a few complaints that had been made regarding the thread.
Having had this discussion it has been decided that the thread should remain open at this moment in time. However, please note that pending further enquries some posts maybe subject to removal and can we ask that members try to keep there posts on topic and as factual as possible.

Quite ironic really given where the boiler was built that the term for such behaviour is a German word, schadenfreude.

Just wanted to bring this up - there's a preservation era precedent for stay failure in an all steel boiler:

    From the 21C123 site: http://www.bulleidsociety.org/21C123/21C123_Preservation.html

Interesting that it should show similar symptons - and again, cooling cycles are that which are singled out for causing the most problems. However, as said in the text above - the firebox was the reason for the engine's original withdrawal, so is not comparable on a like for like with Tornado's brand new boiler.

In theory, mind - could not this be taken on board, and the boiler design further developed, to keep the boiler warm between runs?

My dad's Lotus has a device which keeps the engine block warm in the winter. Could not - through the use of natural convection of heat through water - a set of electric heat conductors, perhaps?

I am not an engineer, merely an English Student - if it's a daft idea, say so, but please clarify for me as to why! :)

Boiler warm between runs... I imagine that warm wouldn't make a lot of difference, you'd need to be keeping it at running heat with a full blown fire going, and it would be rather expensive on fuel... It gives me a vision of a preserved line having all their locomotives lined up plumbed into a set of steam turbines and generating coal fired electricity to sell back to the National Grid:)

What I’d like to know is: would Tornado have been allowed over the Harrogate line (Railway Touring Co. 12.05.11) due to the restrictions on “large” locos under the overbridge north of Hornbeam Park station. Or is it just Belpaire fireboxed locos that have the restriction?

Dont know if anybody saw the extreme trains program on sky, when they covered the preparation of 3885 challenger prior to a run.

Over in the USA, they pre-heat the boiler with steam for a period, and only once they feel the metalwork is to temparature do they fill the boiler with HOT water. They do this to avoid heating stresses, was an interesting sequence.

I wondered that and also Tornado's run up the Hope Valley later in the year, a route which is tight to gauge for some loco's. We shall have to wait and see.....

The restriction is on a per loco basis, not a blanket restriction on all "large" locos, so if Tornado fits under the bridge in question then fair enough.

The decision has been taken this winter to keep a fire in Waverley all winter, at substantial cost, as a preventative measure, and Waverley, once lit, stays lit all season.

The boiler technology may be different but the theory will have a lot in common.

Where do they source the steam, a stationary boiler specific for the task or is there a readily tapped source already used for other purposes?
