Cop : If you see a loco for the first time it is a "cop". A rare "cop" would be seeing a loco well away from its usual route. For example a Doncaster B1 turning up in Bristol.

Bashing = obsessively travelling behind your favourite class of loco ( there are also 'track bashers' whose prime objective in life is to travel over unusual or rare sections of track)
Scratching = number collecting, or even completing collecting the numbers of a particular class.

Surely scratching is what bathers did after bashing all weekend including kipping overnight in a compo?

Short for vegetable, insulting term for persistent platform enders or your mates for amusement.

There is a whole lexicon out there. Gripper - a ticket collector and obviously the generic enthusiast - gricer.

Something of an insight to the world of 'bashing' here:

Nice little trip down memory lane there recognised a few faces! I remember the outcry about Rail wanting to rename '408 amongst other reasons , I think that someone from said mag had made a big deal in the previous year or so about why locos should keep their names and not be renamed every 5 minutes. Intresting vid though heard so much about it from various people now I know what all the fuss is about!
