Would it possible to restore 45170 back into the condition she is in at the moment? IE cow catcher, RH drive, Air pump/ reservoir and current smokebox door as to represent the loco as per its Turkish life rather than restore it like 45160?

I think that is a question that only the person paying for the work can answer!

According to this months steam railway, one of the repatriated 8f's is up for sale, together with the frames for 48518.
The article suggests that 45166 will be sold as the group wants to buy more 8F's from Turkey.

Whilst as 61624 points out the eventual appearance of the locomotive is the owner's prerogative it would make for a more historically valuable artefact if restored to its Turkish condition, which I am all in favour of. It is a fascinating story well worth telling.

Ah yes, but how many heritage lines could it run on without a vacuum brake?

True - but it could be dual braked, which would make it especially useful, and not detract from its historical integrity. Externally the difference would be negligible.

I am certain that I have already asked this question but time moves on and things change.

Were\are there any useful 8F spares available from Turkey? At least two pony truck wheels and four would be nice so that the new build Patriot can use them and return two to the 8F chassis which is being used for parts.

Why bother when the pony truck A-frame off 48518 was gas axed.

A pity. Perhaps a complete pony truck is available.

I was rather hoping that a friendly millionnaire could have been found to provide a parallel boiler to represent a less well known 8F varient that ran in Egypt.

It would be much easier to buy an 8f from turkey and do it up, I understand there could be 2 more potential for sale, though 1 is missing bits and not in as good condition (better than a Barry wreck, but not the best), the other is in similar condition, as the two that came back... According to reports apart from the official museums, everything else in turkey is for scrap, including examples of the Vulcan foundry 2-10-0's built for Turkey that the 8fs were substituted for until after the war and a host of German classes.

still thinking of the less good 8f.. it could provide useful bits to 48173, and a tender !

What from 48518 actually remains, and what benefitted besides the patriot and the county? My thoughts for 48518's frames is that it would make an interesting picnic table or viewing platform...

I seem to recall seeing a stanier tender with 48173 shortly after it arrived at the CVR, so it actually has 2 tenders to choose from!

    Found it! - pic/info here

Equally pointless. We have enough 8Fs

Equally pointless. we have enough 8Fs in various states of decrepitude over here without getting more.

It was the boiler I was talking about. As far as I know none of the Turkish 8Fs were reboilered with parallel boilers so they do not represent a development from the standard locomotive.

The Egyption locomotives were new build with parallel boilers. I do not have chapter and verse available but some of them were built in the UK in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Sorry confused.... Are you saying ...

8f Spare parts are pointless ?

    Or

bringing one from Turkey for an Egyptian rebuild is pointless ?

    Or

Bringing more 8fs back for restoration is pointless (given there's only 1x BR example left to restore ?)

Are you suggesting a new build Egyptian 8F ? To me that would be pointless, as there's substantially more complete Turkish examples available as a starting point... Much more than 48518 ?

Parallel boilered 8Fs. Where on earth did you get that one from?
You are not refering to the EX GCR O4s that were over there at the same time are you?

Now if you ask me, it would be far more interesting to repatriate one of those than yet another 8F! Wouldn't be able to run in Britain, of course (except possibly Nene Valley) but would make a very interesting static exhibit.

    (Here's a photo, for those who aren't familiar with the type: http://www.enuii.org/vulcan_foundry/photographs/locomotives/Publicity/Turkish 2-10-0.pdf )
