    Plenty of wheels true enough. However curvature may present issues and so far as the travelling public are concerned, neither are particularly glamorous. Maybe we have an education issue. Railways were originally mineral carriers, that was where the money was made and these rather slow, unglamorous workhorses were responsible for a substantial part of railway income. And, that being understood, it should be widely appreciated that these rather plain freight engines are very suited to preserved railway operations.

    Definitely, apart from my beloved black fives, freight engines make up the rest of my favourites, the BR 9F, the L and Y small and large boilered 7Fs and the LMS 8F, I'd happily swap a glamorous passenger loco for any of these pulling my train, or in the case of the L and Y 7Fs, have one built, rather than a new passenger loco

    Am I reading this right; PH recommending the use of a nice 2-8-0 over a small tank engine working right to its limit? :) Still hasn't accepted that buffet cars are actually quite good at making money though...

    plus the S15 is rated at 6F , So i would imagine more powerful than a black 5, or B1, the S15 is a slogger, not the fastest of machines, but get it going, set it up and it will walk up anything, very underrated machines.

    Arguably, for the vanishingly small category of "Extinct Southern heavy shunters that might be of use on a preserved line" the G16 would be a better fit, since the Z was at least partly created as an even more specialised alternative to the LSWR class. Among other undesirable features they were capable of sustained steaming (so they blew off noisily in urban hump yards :eek:), had superheaters (so regulator response was a little woolly and wagons got crushed) and had leading bogies (which cost money that could be spent on EMUs). Unfortunately you'd have to rebuild every platform in the country before they could go anywhere, including on GWR lines...

    Ok, ok, I'll stop.

    (a) You are not reading the thread properly. Have already said NYMR is one of the the few lines that can justify larger motive power. Most cannot and certainly in the context of a 25m.p.h. railway freight, or secondary passenger types meet the requirements best. To return to the video, it demonstrates graphically how a larger wheeled machine struggles on a steeply graded line. In the Fletcher era, the N.E.R. had a class of small wheeled locomotives specially for Whitby services.

    (b) Catering profits would be better if both land and vehicle based catering services were not competing with one another to pour tea down passenger throats.

    Ah sorry, was only vaguely following the thread, it is only SR motive power after all. ;)

    Any evidence to prove that? Many passengers would rather combine the experience of travelling on a steam train and having a bite to eat rather than waste time sitting in a cafe. And equally, buffet cars do have their culinary limits, so for those wanting something a little more substantial, a ground based cafe is required. I don't see it as any different to theme parks in this respect, which tend to have a number of outlets ranging from quick snack-bars right up to proper restaurants.

    I remember watching the Super D really struggling to get up to Goathland. I didn't think it would make it (it did - just). I can't remember the year.

    I'm sure there must have been something amiss though.

    Well I tend not to go to theme parks so have little personal experience. Sitting in a cafe is hardly "wasting time" unless one is a hyperactive gricer who is likely to come equipped with Thermos flask and Ginsters pasty thus avoiding the facilities expensively provided by the operating company completely!

    I think if we are going down that line, then probably the most cost-effective new build would be a Billinton E2, on the grounds that it is the only type of locomotive you can legitimately paint blue and put a face on the front :rolleyes:

    Mind you a lot depends on what is being offered ,and the potion size, some railway refreshment rooms are very good and offer a very good choice, but at the same time i have taken one look at the menu, and walked down to the local pub, in one place the fare on offer was prepacked, not fresh sandwiches, no main meals except a supermarket type pasty and oven chips, i found a local pub, had a home cooked hot pot and a pint for about £1 more.

    the Maunsell Z class was indeed a very clever design. the inside valve gear for the 3rd cylinder was as clever as W.H. Pearce's valvegears for the GWR, and shows Holcroft's influence.

    a U class on test took 240 tons of 7 pullman cars on the 'Southern Belle'.

    quite a few of the Maunsell designs had steeply sloping fireboxes including the U class. perhaps the steaming problems on the NYMR were more to do with firing technique?

    If you can fire a standard mogol you should be able to fire a U boat, simular size and shape of box of course how you fire it is the big question, if you stuff it, they dont like it, with 31625 and 31874, plenty under the door and light and bright seemed to work best , but that was only on MHR metals.with 5 on,with plenty in hand.
