It was the new build A3 kept under covers at York being sent to Bury to replace the scrap pile there, it carried temporary nameplates "Shergar" and was driven by NRM top man Lord Lucan.
Interesting short story at the ELR many years ago involving a mistaken identity. The lady in the cottage at Townsend Fold is said to have phoned Bolton Strret station complaining about the clag out of the passing green steam engine spoiling her washing. My good friend at the time in the booking office who took the call offered to recompense her for the re-washing, however, she was very sympathetic to the railways cause and just asked that he had a word with the driver, don't do smoke past her place! My friend duly thanked her and said he would speak with the driver on his arrival at Bury. Upon putting the phone done he called to the other guys in the booking office asking what loco's were in use that day, you've guessed it - the green steam engine was no other than a green Deltic!!
