A further thought here, if I may. Some of the Continental European Pacific designs had sloping throatplates at the front of the firebox. This had the effect of moving the rear tubeplate forward a couple of feet and putting that distance between the burning coals and tube ends, even in the absence of a discrete combustion chamber.

Attached are a diagram and photo of a Czechoslovakian Class 387 Pacific, a 3-cylinder design of 1926. Its boiler layout and dimensions are very close to those of the well-known Bavarian S3/6 type. In both cases, there is no combustion chamber but there is a sloping throatplate, the front tubeplate is set well back and the tube length is only 5250mm (17ft 3in).

So if Churchward had seen the Great Bear's tube length as a problem, he would have had a number of options to address it.

I think the UK first locos to have a sloping throatplate were the GNR large atlantics

If you get into Graces Guide and search John Fowler there is mention of combustion chambers

Can we make a Peter Davis fan club and ask him to publish coresponding Webb four-cylinder compound book?

Do you have the title to hand? I would be interested in obtaining a copy off the net tomorrow if the budget allows, post pay day...!

    Certainly Simon:
    F. W. Webb's Three-Cylinder Compounds by Peter Davis (2020) published by The London & North Western Railway Society, ISBN 978-0-9570158-5-2

I reviewed this for the 8F Society and found that it is in very short supply. The rrp appears to be £30 but those advertising it as available have a price of £50 and over.
