A lady seated adjacent to us had some cheap electric ones from Poundland. Mrs Spamcan thought the "intimate" lighting added to the experience but wasn't so impressed with the carriage heating. Worked fine on the way there but was decidedly below par on the way back.

Yes, Number 9 wasn't extended at all. Nice departure from Connington and a nice run on the main south of Sandy.

Cheers. I finally managed to update the firmware on my camera during the week, and the image quality at high ISOs is much better than before.

Well it was a magical moment at Lincoln as 60009 pulled in for the return journey. With the station mostly closed off with crowd control measures due to the christmas fayre the platform end was relatively deserted as 60009 came to a stand. The train was even announced as "the 17.45 to Kings Cross"! The smoke drifted down under the platform canopy, illuminated by the sodium lights, platform staff chatted to the driver, the road was given, a lamp waved and with a sharp chime on the whistle USA departed away from a the near empty platform in true BTF Elizabethan fashion, slowly and stately with just a hint of a slip towards Newark, Grantham and Kings X - a real time warp moment and essentially two or three of us had it to ourselves! Magic.

    4000 ISO? I need a new camera.............:rolleyes1:

Yep. I actually read the instructions properly this time, once I'd done that the update was very easy. I haven't really looked to see what else the update does, other than allow in-camera processing and editing of photos.

    Yeah definitely.

I notice the leaking drain cock on No. 9 has finally been sorted. It was blowing on the outward but not on the return. Loco still sounds a bit rough though.

I noticed this tonight too. I counted 4 Network Rail guys and another 4-5 BTP Officers. I had my tripod set up at the end of Platform 0 looking out over Platform 1 to get a shot of the name plate with people walking passed but was told no tripods allowed anywhere on the station, even though where I was there was no train and no people walking. I guess they've become rather hot at Kings Cross after 60163's trip there on The Talisman back in 09 but I haven't really had any problems at other stations, such as photting 6201 at Paddington last week and 70000 at London Victoria on a weekday during rush hour in the evening. Still, 60009 looked great...

Sounded spot on accelerating away from Connington on the way back. Couldn't hear much when she was linked up though so maybe that's when the lopsidedness occurs.

So we did have the steam heat stock and (at the front) it was nice and warm also in all the cars down to the buffet. As has been said, No 9 was worked but not hard and the possible even time run (scheduled) between Newark and Peterborough just didn't materialise. We pottered up to Stoke in the high fifties with the loco wound back and just a steady purr from up front. After switching to the slow (approach control really does add ages to running times) we drifted down the other side at 70+. Sadly the ECML was running late so we were held at Connington and that meant we couldn't keep our FL path. Late arrival was primarily because of the above and that we did in fact stop at Potters Bar to drop passengers even though the timings didn't show a stop on the return.

That said, it was a good day out with USA doing just about what was needed and the bonus of seeing Rood Ashton Hall departing from Lincoln. Plus of course, an A4 in The Cross, where they should be, is always an occasion to be savoured.

    Hello All,

I was at London Kings Cross for the departure and a collection of photographs have been added to my Rail Traction Photos website. These include shots taken from the cab of 'UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA' as I was very fortunate to be allowed on the footplate briefly, before she departed with the tour. I thank the crew again for allowing me to do this. Made my day.

    Link here;

London Trip. Saturday 8th.December 2012. - Rail Traction Photos by Richard Smith

If link does not work first time, please try the again later. Because it's probably because I am updating the collection with photos of 60163 'TORNADO' hauling "The Cathedrals Express" and 35028 'CLAN LINE' hauling a "VSOE Luncheon Excursion" which I took later the same day.

Hope you enjoy viewing my photographs.

    Best regards Steamhawk216.

    Hi all,

Please see my link to my shot of Number 9 on its outward journey on Saturday morning.

    All sizes | 60009 - Lindum Fayre | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Was an equally enjoyable sight standing on Grantham station for the return to hear her chime through, after regular updates over the stations tannoy of the A4's progress!!!

A lovely day indeed, although a diversion away from that big hill in Lincoln to the xmas market maybe in store for next time :)

    Cheers
    Oli
