I knew I should of made a comment earlier, but didn't want to upset Ralph again, could always do a repeat of last year and decide the Crewe dead weight isn't required after half the tour ;).

They had better be, Sir Ralph! Remember who has charge of the seating plan......and I am sure we could arrange for you to be sat next to that suddenly very sticky (read welded shut) window! Lol

If we had known just how unreliable Crewe was going to be on that given day, we would have made sure the poodle had all the coal it needed.

Another person sitting next to a shut window. I must review our coach window maint schedule.

    Lol

Hi Ben, Will The Cumbrian Conqueror route be Shap both ways as in the tour route info or Shap first then return via Settle Carlisle as stated at the top right of the tour page?

In the brochure, page 18, it says 'We retrace our outbound journey, with high speed unassisted steam all the way to Tyseley' that must mean back over Shap.

cant remember when this was but u are right in the i.d. of the locos. The Duchesses were piloted on rare accs, i have seen a pic of a black 5 doing just that on the main line. My location is Burrs on the ELR

I've seen pictures of Duchesses piloted by 2-6-4 tanks, Black 5s, Royal Scots, Clans and Patriots and even a Black 5 being
piloted by a Duchess which was apparently against the rules. But, as you say, double headed workings were rare.

If we use Western Region practice then Nunney was the train engine, though I'm struggling to think why Swindon thought putting the pilot loco inside was better.

The reason I've always been told, and I'm not sure how much sense this makes, is that the pilot engine driver might not know the road as well as the train driver so the train engine would go on front so the driver with, supposed, greater route knowledge would be able to control the train better.

What I wonder is that why would the driver of the pilot engine have a lesser route knowledge than the train engine driver. Of course, what I've been told may be wrong.
