Footage from last Saturday's Blackpool Illuminations Express, with 45596 putting in an exhilarating performance through Salwick on the return leg:

That was a visual delight especially with the glow from the firebox reflecting off each of the OHLE as Bahamas shot underneath.

Thanks Al, that’s one benefit of the OHLE, and I was glad that the firebox doors were open.

It was always a thrill to cop a Jub working an express train to Blackpool back in the day, and it still is with this excellent performance superbly captured by you, I'm very glad to have shared it with you too David.

Route guide sent with confirmation email suggests Clun Castle.

Arriving at a rather cold and damp Nuneaton.
    Standard at front.

Ulleskelf. A late Blackpool to York helped give us a nice performance

Would probably have gone straight through had the signaller not tried to route him through P2. Came to a stand at the signal before, had to have the route changed, as not gauged for Ulleskelf. As such followed the Blackpool and the rest is history. Made for some nice running just down the road.

Same thing happened with the two Castles at Bristol earlier this year. I don't know how it all works, but it does surprise me that the signallers don't have gauging information about the trains they're responsible for.

They probably do. But remember they are just signalling one train. Several per hour. Indeed I was at Ulleskelf for 30 mins in total and saw 10 trains. 1 every 3 mins. Not always going to be simple and easy, and everyone is human.

It's a good job the driver knew where he could and could not go.

Absolutely. Driving a GW loco on the network has quickly become a logistical nightmare with the signals on the wrong side and any number of GW specific gauging restrictions that can catch the unwary signaller and demands the crew are on top of their game. Fortunately they usually are.
