Very glad that Edgecumbe was there.
For 6201 it is a hot box?

Here in the states a while back(1991) Union Pacific 3985 had an overheated bearing and the crew used ice packs to keep them cool. Many stops along the way over the 300 mile distance between Cheyeen and Green River, Wyoming. Well the 2 UP engines 844 were headed to a huge railfair out in California. The bearing was repaired overnight for the Next days journey.

Just got back in from a very entertaining day out with 6201 and 5043. Main point of interest, the lowest speed on Shap was 58 MPH but the summit was crested at 60. Mike Notley was on board so we will have to wait for the 'official' figures.

So 6233 held the Last record and what was that? 57mph?
60mph at the Summit, Wow. I hope someone went to the Summit Location.

I take it then that 6201 will be awaiting a box to tow her back to tyseley?
One of the facebook groups had someone report that 5043 ran out of coal at warrington and was being towed by 47500, is there any truth in this? I highly doubt it!
It seems whatever that the team managed to keep the trip together! so well done!

Interesting that the Castle appears to take the same time as the Brit to do the Hangmans Bridge(remains of) to the Road Bridge section on the approach to the summit. Taken from two of the video clips of todays trains.

Both locos went very well it seems. Shame that the Helm tunnel restriction ruins a full speed tilt at a class 7 Blue Riband.

What a sight these pair made this morning, one of the most powerful looking steam trains I have seen, it looked like a rocket ascent! The castle looked great on its owna nd was going well at Birkett common past a very large gallery.

My shots can be found here of Greenholme bank, and both spots at Birkett, along with a shot of Britannia.

    Cheers

Looking at my videos 5043 has load 11 and 70000 has load 12. Not complaining though, what a cracking sight all three locos were today and thanks to all involved.

I hope they have Lizzy sorted out shortly.

I will sort out the vids tomorrow morning, been a long day.

    Neil.

Think that might have something to do with a delayed Freight train from Freightliner (6N51 I think) waiting in the section behind the Earl at Appleby, so tour was made to proceed, to get passed at Hellifield. Still I saw the Castle at Smardale and have to say was more than impressed.

Tyseley storms the fells again 10 March 2012

With LMS Stanier Pacific No 6201 a Tyseley resident these days, her hosts took the opportunity to pair her with their adventurous Castle 4-6-0 No 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe for a double-headed assault on both Shap and the Settle-Carlisle line.

They came onto our 10 coaches at Carnforth (making 12 for the climb) and by Burton we were at 65, and 71 at Elmsfield. We had dropped only to 66 at Oxenholme, well into the climb to Grayrigg, and maintained this almost to the top, dropping only momentarily to 64. On through the Lune gorge at maximum speed, we dropped only to 68 at Greenholme, 64 at Scout Green, 58 at Salterwath and a minimum of 57 just before Shap Summit. This magnificent performance was matched by a thrilling downhill run at maximum speed - 75 through Penrith was unforgettable!

The break at Carlisle gave us a brief glimpse of No 70000 Britannia, returning south on another railtour after its epic journey last week. Then we heard the news that No 6201 had run a warm tender axlebox, so it was for No 5043 to take 11 coaches solo back over the S&C.

She set to the task with a will and we were 8 minutes early into Appleby. Setting off still early after a quick splash, we were doing 57 by Smardale Viaduct, 46 through Kirkby Stephen and Birkett, then accelerated up Mallerstang, making most of the climb at 50 or just under, with 48 at the summit. Another magnificent climb with a plucky and capable engine, and there were many smiles on the train as we ratteld down at line speed to Hellifield. A final burst came when we accelerated from 24 over Whalley viaduct to 31 at the entrance to Wilpshire tunnel.

All this effort had depleted the Castle's coal supplies and we needed a diesel pilot from Warrington to get the train home to Tyseley at a reasonable time after a thrilling day.

Either repaired at Appleby or removed by road, I imagine.

Presumably 6201 was considered fit enough to leave Carlisle . Has she been declared a total failure at Appleby ?

No She was left at Carlisle but after having some remedial work do was heading south light via the S&C. It seems that the problem recurred and so it was decided to stop at Appleby for a decision to be taken as to whether to try to fix it there or.........

There would be little point in towing with a diesel as since the hot box would occur whatever the propulsion was.

5043 did not run out of coal at Warrington.
We were informed on the train that owing to high consumption of the poor quality of the coal added at Carlisle, reported to be small and dusty, there was doubt about having enough to get all the way back to Tyseley.
So the decision was made to get 47500 to meet us and run as pilot. This also meant that the Crewe water stop could also be omitted, enabling the train to get back on time. So the 47 duly met us at Warrington.

There were clearly high and low points with this tour. It is alway annoying when a loco gets a hot box especially on the tender although less serious that the main drivers. To run out of coal seems odd to me. If the tender was filled up at Carlisle then surely there should have been enough to get beyond Warrington on the return. One of the highlights with any steam tour is the dash through Bank Quay station but clearly this was denied due to the attachment of the diesel pilot here.

Never the less, a reasonably good day over all for steam on the national network it would seem.
