The SECR J class was a class of 0-6-4T steam tank locomotive built for heavy freight service on the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, by Harry Wainwright.

    Thanks for posting these pictures.

I believe the J-class was used mainly on heavy suburban and semi-fast passenger trains, rather than freight work. They survived until 1949-51, outliving other types of British 0-6-4 tanks.

I used to know a main line driver who had fired them in his carreer. he said "they took a lot of getting hot" which I interpreted as meaning they did not run well until the superheater heated up. The valves were only 8" diameter and I suspect the steam was rather throttled. It was the first SECR superheated design and there was still a lot to learn.
