Not very much. I doubt that the average railway enthusiast is swayed to visit by the photos that appear in the various railway magazines. Having the pictures published is purely for the kudos of the photographer.

I guess that there are two major camps amongst railway enthusiasts. There are those that visit railways, generally take lots of photos and claim that they have had a cup of tea and bought a sandwich as evidence that they have contributed. Then there are a lot of others, like me and Chessie, who look upon most such people as free-loaders. There's a similar discussion going on on the NYMR Forum where someone has the temerity to suggest certain 'improvements' that would make it easier for him to take photos and in a later post essentially admits that he rarely travels or spends money at the railway.

It's been suggested that, we have an estimate from the police as to how many people visited the NYMR for the Wartime weekend and we know how many travelled so we can estimate the contribution to the coffers of the non-travelling public. I'd be interested to know if Bean Counter can put figures to that.

About the only photographers who contribute at a realistic level are those that pay to go on organised charters.
There'll, no doubt, be a large posting following this but none of it will change the minds of the two entrenched camps.

I think you're very wrong. There are some railways who are prepared to run charters knowing the biggest benefit will be the free publicity from the photos that are likely to appear in mags. Putting an advert in a mag is hugely expensive.

Ask the GCR how much they make from lineside permits?

Haven't been around here for a month or two, surprised to see that this is still rumbling on. Lots of thinks, ifs and maybes still - as I said way back, anyone got a definitive answer? Obviously I know the MHR's definitive view, any others?
