Pretty sure it will unless West Coast have another tour the same day . Probably Tangmere but who knows as things might change before then.

Presumably the timing on Tangmere being so out is down to a stretched chain (s)? Is that a simple fix? Is there scope to tighten the chain or is it a case of replacing it? Wikipedia says the following so presumably all preserved Bulleids have had their chains replaced at least once?

"Valve timing was highly unpredictable; this has been attributed to chain stretch, although Bulleid claimed that it was allowed for. The chains were replaced as part of a valve and piston examination at around 30,000 to 36,000 miles (48,000 to 58,000 km), by which time they were considerably worn.[4] This wear, in the chain pins and sprockets, could result in an elongation of the chains by as much as 6 inches (15.2 cm). Bulleid asserted that a slack of 3 inches (76.2 mm) would be absorbed by the chain coming under load, with the remaining valve irregularity corrected by adjusting the cut-off.[6]"

Useful info for those unaware. I think everyone except @Oswald T Wistle missed my double edged comment on the NoBelle thread about the same thing.

This is how it should sound, they need someone who understands how to set Mr Bulleid's chain drive valve gear!

That climb was memorable with 11 on that would not normally be allowed to go to Dorchester with a Class 7 unassisted. But the diesel failed, Pete Roberts was driving and Tangmere was in good nick so the rest, as they say, is history. If I recall it was an average of 22 mph through the tunnel.

Yes, but this was in 2009 and a lot can happen to a locomotive in 15 years as is self evidently the case.

AFAIK the valves for all three cylinders are driven from a single shaft, so would a stretched chain not affect them all in the same way?

I don't think West Coast can afford for Tangmere to have any downtime at the moment! So long as it moves and makes steam that is probably sufficient for them!!

A fairly noisy climb with Tangmere on a returning Scarborough Flyer when they ran from Crewe some years ago, 2012 if I recall.

Yes, the days when Tangmere was ok and also when the visual impact of combustion was more acceptable.

Sorry to bang on about it but I think we have now seen enough examples of the power of a Bulleid and specifically what Tangmere used to be like.....also driven by the few West Coast people who really knew how to handle her.

Imagine what, for example, folk would be saying if Scots Guardsman was heard to be limping around the Fells currently all out of sorts. But fair comment to say that now is probably not the time to take Tangmere out of service to sort her out.

Back then, Tangmere was part owned by Ian Riley, who I'm sure kept on top of everything, and of course driven by people who knew how to get the best out of a Spamcan,
