I think Sidmouth means that they are "backed into a corner" as if they let WCRC get away with it, the other TOC can push their luck as well.

ORR have been very clear they have not decided to revoke the licence - they are considering revoking it and will decide following consultation. They cannot pre-judge the outcome otherwise there is no point in consulting; and there is a process which must be followed. Therefore, as you say, there may still be a way back for WCRC and I hope they succeed. Either way I agree this is a shot across the bows for the sector and I am sure all loco/stock owners and tour promoters who use WCRC, not all of them called Jeremy, will be thinking hard about their future options.

If following suspension the remedial measures, together with probably tighter monitoring, are judged as robust how is that "getting away with it". The other TOCs far from pushing their luck will realise if they let standards slip they too may be suspended.

Despite the bluster of WCR management NR and ORR will not let them back on the network unless their case is watertight, copper bottomed and gold plated. Do I personally think all will be fixed by the middle of May, IMHO I very much doubt it

Okay experts, what do you think ?

As a humble ignorant consumer, I booked two tickets on the Jacobite for 11th May - first trip of the season. This was just before the WCR announcement. Since then, I''ve been trying to find out what the motive power for the day will be. WCR are 'awaiting confirmation'.

So.......... Do I cancel and use the money to book on the much cheaper scheduled service ? Do I wait and see ? What is the likelihood of steam traction being available on the 11th; this being three days before any possibility of the ban being lifted ?.

    All thoughts gratefully received.

The short answer is that probably nobody knows. That said, waiting until it starts to run, whenever that is, if you can do it, makes sense to me.

It depends what balance you place on seeing scenery and riding on steam trains. You can have a very nice break on a Highland Explorer ticket which includes the boat and the bus to link up Kyle and Mallaig.

Similarly I'd be saying to Mike1522 look at the Ffestiniog, the Welsh Highland, the Severn Valley and the North Yorkshire Moors and the National railway Museum at York. You could still have a very good trip Mike.

    Latest info from RTC

The Great Britain VIII - Update

West Coast Railways had a very positive meeting with the O.R.R. yesterday afternoon. The O.R.R.'s primary concern is the operation of a safe railway and they were pleased with the progress made by West Coast Railways in this direction.

West Coast Railways have a meeting with Network Rail at 12.00 noon tomorrow, we understand that they have now completed the work requested by Network Rail and we hope for a positive outcome at this meeting.

Our priority is to run the majority of the tour hauled by steam.

Your tickets will be despatched tomorrow by first class post should we receive the positive outcome that we are expecting, if this is not the case the only option may be to cancel the tour.

The train will leave London Victoria Station, platform 2, at 08.44 on Tuesday.

We are very sorry for the continued uncertainty and hope you understand the impossible position that we are in, which is completely outside of our control.

As you know we operate steam tours all over the world, this situation is far worse than we have experienced in any other country in the world.

On a positive note Network Rail have now recommenced timing the Great Britain VIII tour, as have now received the timings for the first three days.

    Kind regards
    The Railway Touring Company

Now I can't be sure, but on the way back from the shops just now I think I saw one of the WCRC directors.

Yes, but I think one or two of the mods might be having a sense of humour failure over this business.

Just remember, don't mention the SPAD war. I did once, but I think I got away with it ...

If any TV writer is thinking of creating a new character of the ilk of Alf Garnett, Victor Meldrew, Basil Fawlty, etc. They could read railway enthusiast Internet forums to gain material for a new perpetually angry character!

And that, dear reader, is why both this thread and the parallel 'ramifications' thread continue to tick over with only the occasional blip. It's not gone unnoticed that (almost) everyone is being pretty sensible over this matter. Thanks.

(Now retreats to somewhere off-line before the wheels come off!)
