Well while we're on favourite pictures of the Duke. Sunset on 28th December 1995, the Met Office analysis of this week is worth reading.
In a temperature of c -10 C in completely still conditions and stood on 6 inches or more of solid frozen snow, 71000 at Birkett Common with a very late running CME.
A friend with me that day described this as one of his best video sequences ever, that exhaust just hung in the air for ages.

Well, my best shot of 71000 isn't quite up to the standards of some of the pictures above, but I still won a prize at our local village show for it! Furthermore, I never thought the Duke would ever turn up in Chichester. The date was 18th December 2004.

Regrettably, I haven't digitalised my picture of what must be 71000's finest hour - even more so than the S&C trip already mentioned - when it took a full train plus a dead (failed) Class 47 diesel up Upwey Bank unaided. Still, there was quite a crowd looking down from above the shorter Bincombe Tunnel so maybe someone else has a picture. After 71000 had disappeared from view, everyone just looked at each other in silence. We knew we had just witnessed something quite remarkable.

After the good news about 6024 and with Gresley not far off a return to the main line, hopefully, 71000 will soon be the third 8P back in action this year or early next.

Although the last few days have been predominantly dry there have been some periods of light rain. For the last couple of hours, here in Darwen, steady to heavy rain has been falling continuously. The Met Office Fire Index for Tuesday in the NW is low - so, fingers firmly crossed, the Pendle Dalesman should be diesel free.

With or without a diesel, I would be grateful if anyone travelling on tomorrow's train can record and then post a time for the climb from Ormside to the Aisgill summit sign. I am keeping a record of all posted times for the year. [Pleases see post #63 above for full details].
Thanks in anticipation and enjoy. Remember, "Oswald needs YOUR time!"

It was on 17th August 2005. We captured it on video and an amazing effort by an amazing engine with 11 coaches and a dead 47 on the back.

(Apologies for continuing this serious thread drift.)
Thank you. I was on that trip but hadn't taken proper account of the load and never realised how hard the Duke was working. I don't remember how far back I was in the train, but I think I didn't hear much sound from the loco. That says a lot for the excellent drafting.
I'd love to see your video.

She never was a particularly loud engine but you always got the sense of power. Not sure how to upload videos on here but we did submit this footage (and another storming run up Savernake) to PSOV and it appeared on Mainline 2005 Volume 2.
