Conversley, i used to travel every year, but ceased when it became steam only from York to Scarborough only. The least interesting section imo, flat as a pancake, and the loco is never tested. Plus sitting in the sidings near Holgate for an hour in the morning and evening also put me off. So for me a definite change for the better.

Thanks. That'll do me. I had to set off for home before it stirred itself from Carlisle on Saturday.

when you think Scarboroughs used to run 3 days a week with circuits along with the cross pennine trips on top , the offering has marketly changed . Is that a reflection of demand (lack of) or operational practicalities

I'm sure that the lack of servicing facilities at York has a lot to do with it.

Increasingly it seems that the quality of servicing facilities is going higher up the priority list and if York is not as good as it was then you may well be spot on with that comment. I am reflecting on the distance travelled by the train on the GB tour when it went back to Joppa from Stirling for stabling and servicing. West Coast didn't do that for fun; it must have been what they wanted and the best was that far away.

I know that some folk mutter when steam comes on at Carnforth (and Hellifield) rather than elsewhere but you can't deny that these are local and handy for a proper depot.

It's the facilities that were used at the NRM, including I believe a pit, that are now no longer available meaning that it's impracticable to stable a loco there as in the past for the SSE, hence this year there are just a few with steam all the way from Carnforth.

Is the lack of servicing facilities temporary or permanent?

Definitely a day of two halves. Rain that was coming down horizontally in sheets stopped moments before the late-running Scots Guardsman arrived and on the return a heavy cloud that had moved across the sun broke, again just at theright time as the train (early) came into earshot.

My video from today of Guardsman at Stockber but it seems odd in a 2021 thread?

It's in the right place now.;)
