    Does seem odd, although no doubt there will be an operational reason? Is there a reason a Class 40 cannot run along the line from Settle Junction to Carnforth (which would be rather ironic as the only time I ever travelled behind a 40 was D200 when it unexpectedly popped up on that leg of a CME I was on some time in the 80's - the child me was suitably disgusted!)

    I was told it was a gauging issue with the Class 40,a surprise really as I have photographed the engine on that line.However things do change !

    That's correct the 40 is not gauged for Settle junc to Carnforth hence it returned via Blackburn and Preston. It was then leading again from Carnforth to Chester.
    BIL was on top form and on the return passed through Penrith at 70, however, the gathered phalanx of photographers on the down platform had the pleasure of an 11 coach Pendalino blocking their view.

    Id spotted the Pendo had stopped at Penrith on Traksy and noticed 35018 approaching thinking that will upset someone.

    I would be surprised if it is actually out of gauge, but not surprised if it has just not been recently checked for that route.

    I would guess that like the CME (no longer a 1Z the path is now in the WTT) and hence picks up something other than a Z. But others more "in the know" I am sure can confirm.

    There are now "Q" paths (runs as required) in the working timetable for many of RTC's & WCRC's regular workings. Although it's not a hard-&-fast rule, "Z" in the train ID implies a one-off special

    A report on the Dalesman of 5th July. A most pleasant trip in fine weather all day though with some cloud in the morning. I joined at Preston, where the train arrived a couple of minutes early behind D345 with 37706 on the back, though of course the 37 led after reversal. Nonetheless there were many photographers out to see the diesel leg, most of whom seemed to be focussing on the back of the train. Ten coaches with the second diesel at the rear add up to a substantial task for a type 3, and it can safely be said that no records were broken climbing the various banks on the way to Hellifield where arrival was a few minutes late after a check before being let into the down loop. I don't think the Class 40 assisted at any stage.

    35018 and support coach were ready on the other side of the station but had to wait for the diesels to be uncoupled and a Leeds bound service train to pass before shunting on to the stock, now making the load up to 11 for 394 tons tare and around 415 gross, three of the vehicles being Mark Iis from the Steam Dreams set, in sparkling condition incidentally. We were three minutes late away, and once on the main line accelerated to 35½ mph at Long Preston and 55 passing Settle Junction. On the 1-in-100 speed gradually fell to 45 at Settle with a minimum of 33½ near Helwith Bridge before recovering to 41 on the subsequent easing of the gradient. A bit more effort was then applied to pass Horton at 37½ with 38½ afterwards and only a slow decrease to 35 at milepost 246 before easing for the slack at Ribblehead. There was a tsr before Blea Moor, but speed then recovered to 26½ mph entering the tunnel with a maximum of 45½ near Arten Gill before easing for the 30 mph limit at Dent. Recovery saw 53½ mph at Garsdale and 57 at Moorcock with 46 minimum approaching the now very faded summit sign. For the record, Settle was reached in 9 min 9 sec from Hellifield, Ribblehead in 26 m 40 s, Dent 38 m 26 s, Garsdale 43 m 0 s, and Appleby in 64 m 18 s at 55½ mph with arrival at Carlisle's platform 3 in 101 min 14 sec, seven minutes early.

    The set was parked in the siding opposite platform 1 as usual, while 35018 went to turn and to be serviced returning in good time to shunt the stock back to the station, my seat now practically at the front of the formation. This year's trains are pathed through to Grayrigg loop, a much better arrangement than last year and surely making management of the locomotive much easier. Departure was a minute late with a measured acceleration to 38 mph up the initial climb to Wreay, but the the locomotive seemed to be opened up progressively as the run progressed, with improved sound effects the further we went. Speed rose to 50 mph at Southwaite and to 54 up the 1-in-228, falling to 53 up the 1-in-172/164 past Calthwaite, with 64½ on the level after Plumpton The subsequent 1-in-186 brought sped down to 61½, but the easier length through Penrith gave an impressive 69 mph through the station with a maximum of 72½ at Eamont. Speed up the long 1-in-125 gradually fell to 63 at Clifton and 51 at Thrimby Grange with a minimum of 48½, recovering to 53½ on the easier stretch through Shap station and then 50½ approaching post 38¼ on the final part of the ascent. Thus Penrith was passed in 35 min 40 sec and the sign at Shap summit in 40 m 7 s at 56 mph. The 1-in-75 descent gave 76 mph at Scout Green before brakes were applied to control speed to 67 before Tebay, and speed through the Lune gorge gradually dwindled to 50 before Low Gill. The signal controlling Grayrigg loop was approached very cautiously, but the locomotive was practically on top of it with speed down to 5 mph before it cleared, and a slow run in gave a time of 54 min 54 sec from Carlisle.

    Two trains overtook, but departure was held to the scheduled time to allow the second to clear its stop at Oxenholme. Speed rose to 64½ at Hay Fell but was brought down to 61 afterwards, I think just in case. However the road was clear and Oxenholme was passed at 73½ mph with 76 after Hincaster Junction. The usual slow approach before crossing over gave arrival in Carnforth loop in 26 min 45 sec from Grayrigg, just 2 late.

    D345 was waiting alongside, in absolutely sparkling “fresh out of the box” condition that was a credit to the owners and must have made a wonderful sight for the many photographers out on a perfect Summer evening. The restart was punctual with the 40 at the head and 37706 again at the back, though I don't think there was any help from the 37. There is a first for everything, and though I travelled behind a few 40s in normal service I have not previously timed one. There was an acceleration to 49 mph before easing for what I suspect was a slight signal check at Hest Bank, and then Lancaster was passed at 55½ mph with a drop to 48½ at the top of the climb after the station. I don't know what speed limit applies to D345 but it gradually worked this heavy load up to 76 mph after
    Garstang, carrying on in the low seventies to Barton after which power was cut for the Preston stop, reached in 31 min 18 sec from Carnforth after a slow approach to platform 6.
