Superb video, thanks for sharing. Brilliant "Lickey" footage!

Was 45407 possibly nursing a leaking cylinder or piston gland through the day? Didn't appear to be working as hard as the lead engine at Five Ways, and I noticed that leaving Hereford as well.

Yes. Ian Riley had a look at the fireman's side cylinder at Birmingham when we got back so possibly it will get some attention before it goes out again on the 6th.

It looks as good on the Lickey as it sounded from the train. Thanks for being there. Help from the diesel over and above carrying its weight was definitely needed up there.

There was a speed restriction through the platform at Five Ways that's why 45407 was not working.

Excellent video, thanks for sharing. Confirms to me that there was possibly less diesel assistance on Llanvihangel and Colwall than I thought. Seemed to be on low-notch, anyway, judging by the minimal fumes. Think the Fives put in a good account for themselves on the Lickey. Enjoyed the climb very much. Once again, diesel essentially providing what any banker would have done. Difference between a Pannier and a 4-6-0 is the former's total weight being used to provide traction.

Excellent video - particularly the night shots. From the rear carriage of standard I didn't hear the diesel all day (except when we were stationary) and as I'm not a timer it was quite easy to forget the diesel was even there. Great tour!

Couldn't agree more. I left the camera in the car and just spectated from platform 2, was magic!

This tour was a great advert for steam on mainline, plenty of fast running, hill climbing, good day to run a busy mainline(Sunday's), decent timetable with the added constraints of our uk network.

Fingers cross we get a similar tour next year , I would love to know the last time a steam engine went thu Birmingham new street via five ways, selly oak.

Unless I'm mistaken I believe this was the first southbound run over the New St - Kings Norton section, all others to date having been northbound only.

Which route did the 2 panniers take from Tyseley to bank 6201 up the Lickey in 2012?
I know they came down the Lickey.

On the return they took the same route as outward - i.e. they banked up the Lickey and then turned right at Kings Norton continuing beyond Bordesley Junction to Saltley loop where we reversed and the Panniers then pulled us back into Tyseley via Bordesley and Small Heath Junctions.

So would you post them please? Getting rather conflicting reports from my linesider friends, particularly about the return. 'Too much from the diesel' from one between Cwmbran and Pontypool, and another around Abergavenny. It would be more than interesting to see the speeds in the significant locations as we had such a brilliant run with the 5s and 12 on the 19th. Always seems strange to me that there is such a reluctance for anyone to do a detailed report or post speeds when diesels are on the back of what should have been steam hauled trains.
