    I think you will find the wording on the certificate of exemption from the railway safety regulations is generic, and not specific to just the Mk 1 and Mk 2 coaching stock subsequently listed on that particular certificate.

    Section 5(1) of the regulations reads:
    Therefore it is not unreasonable that the excemption should also specify hinged doors, seeing as those are the only type the prohibition applies to.

    The statement that '...In my ignorance I thought all doors were hinged" overlooks the fact that rolling stock can also have sliding doors which operate on runners, not hinges. I also have a funny feeling some vehicles used for the carriage of post/parcels had roller doors on them - athough I guess it would be unlikely for passengers to come into contact with such vehicles.
