    Hello Tom
GWR Tadpole was a long bogie open fish wagon........Of Victorian origin.
So two Toads might if cuddle up at a BL siding might just produce Toadlets !
It was a warm sunny day..........

  4. A lovely warm sunny morning at BL for the naming of 66 757. John Smith, Managing Director of GBRf and John Irven, Chairman WSR plc both made short speeches before a curtain was drawn back to reveal the new nameplate. It was a really welcome surprise to see the Douglas Fear designed WSR logo adorning that nameplate. At last, a main line locomotive carries the 'West Somerset Railway' name. Many other heritage lines have previously been honoured with a main line loco naming but WSR has always been passed by, until now. Well done GBRf for taking the initiative. May '757 roam the rails for many years promoting the wonderful Wizzer.

  5. Good news from Steve S, the manager of the Minehead webcam. A temporary replacement PC has been sourced and all is now up and running. It can be viewed via the Friends of West Somerset Railway website www.fowsr.org.uk or via www.wsr.org.uk

    Thanks - an interesting comparison.

There is a lovely (if that is the right word) photo of the Hull Paragon accident from the early 20th century which I have seen titled as 'Greek meets Greek'. Does anyone have a ready copy?

If you do a Gogle image search for "Hull Paragon rail disaster" there is a similar image to the one you are thinking of as the first link, though not the exact same one - it's taken froma more oblique angle.

The actual picture, with that caption, is I think in one of the standard works on rail accidents - either JAB Hamilton or LTC Rolt. I suspect the former, given that Rolt was rather more sober and less prone to decorative word play. I've got a copy at home, but hard copy only, not electronic...

I recall that photo and title in Red for Danger - so it was Rolt. No longer got a copy - it fell to pieces.

'Tis indeed in Red for Danger (I just checked). I'm on my second copy - my first copy also fell apart!

@Robin White: I'm sure you must own a copy!

A small claim to fame! My former business partner's father was injured in this accident, he was a lad of about 17, and a passenger on the Withernsea to Hull Paragon train, one of the two trains involved. I cant recall what his exact injuries were, but they didn't put him off trains, he subsequently worked for the LNER and later BR, ending up in a senior management job at 222 Marylebone Rd, and being entitled to a first class gold pass covering the whole of BR when he retired. He passed away about 10 years ago now.
