    :bounce:
Anyway it was a handsome loco so it would be nice to see a new-build one.

Last weekend I had a ride in the recreated GWR railmotor at Didcot. Very nice.

It prompts the thought that the railmotor's power bogie and "Tornado" are the only standard gauge new locomotive projects that have actually been finished. Let's get a few more done before actually starting any more.

These are the locomotive equivalent of the belt driven Benz in the motoring world. Not, I feel for use in the same way as Tornado or the railmotor are.

Lets not deride belt drive as a thing of the past, Ford have used it recently in there smaller automatics as did Rover in the MG F, Harley Davidson continue to use it throughout their range of motorcycles.

Have to go for the 5at though I am not sure that the owners of existing class 8 locomotives will be very happy if/when the engine takes to the rails. Contrary to the beliefs of those who look to turbines or poppet valve gears there are good reasons for not using these. If I could have a locomotive from the past it would probably be the W1 in original condition, it was so close to achieving remarkable things and it was a pity that no one found out how to get the best out of it. To build a replica I would need a big win on the euro lottery.......

A modernised BR Standard tank (Class 2,3 or 4) just to see if they can be made a bit more efficient for a small amount of cash. Heritage railways are as much about running money as they are about running trains. Would make a nice engineering project for a postgrad thermodynamics or engineering student.
