Interesting, I heard that the big engine returning to steam next year was due to be based at Southall! Hmmmm...

Southall is simply a place with, according to Sidmouth, apparently three groups presently in residence. Who ends up looking after it is a different matter.....

It's not the Bluebell that will be the base but it is a line in the South. Lets just say if what I was told does happen the line in question will have a very, very impressive loco fleet! Where they will put them all though is another question.

In the South eh? Does the WSR count as South? I reckon Mid Hants, Jeremy has two of his already there.

I would say draw a line across the country at Watford. Below that line I would call the south of England. But why keep a main line loco in the county of Somerset for? Surely to far from London.

If it were to happen that Mr Hosking based all his forthcoming engines at the same line I'm not really sure that it would be particularly beneficial to either - the engines would be cluttering up the loco yard of the railway (which is in the process of returning several engines to traffic, that it will probably want to use in preference to an expensive "visitor") and the engines themselves will be chasing work in the southern half of the country. It would make more commercial sense to base one or more in the north to look at other opportunities and perhaps rotate them periodically.

where ever JH bases his engines is down to him and the railway concerned, but he will no dought look at where has the best track record and has prooven its self to be trusted with his engines, its got to be either the West Somerset or the Mid hants , both have looked after his engines in the past and have first class facilities, which is more important if an engine is to kept in good condition , i feel that it will most probally be the mid hants, because they are close to london and have the experienced mainline support back up

It is sure to be the MHR..She will have to go undercover tho! And as Martin has said she will as with all locos need support backup. That means any inspection (Pit etc) And people with experience and ease of access..

Does anyone from the Swanage know of her condition when she left in 2004? Other than the knackered firebox I mean.

You know Jeremy? Suggest next time you meet him you ask him how he spells his surname.

34007 meant 'knowing' in the sense of going by his previous record, not knowing him personally. I think. :banplease:

Anyway, if the rumours are true, 35027 will be going to Crewe after 70000 is finished, and I was trying to get an idea of how long an overhaul would take.

Give it at least three years, and bear in mind that they will be using 35022's boiler, which needs restoration from ex-Barry condition. Even so, it has been said that the firebox on 35022 was in much better nick than that of 35027 itself. I hope that they do eventually build a new firebox for use on 35027's old boiler, as it would give 25022 a chance of restoration in its own right.
