Oh dear. At least it's only temporary I guess. With the ubiquity of black 5s it seems very contrary to do this to Leander. You need to look pretty hard to identify it as a Jubilee from distance.

Is this a livery some members of the class did wear, out of curiosity?

A few apparently did, Simon. Although AFAIK it was only ones with Fowler tenders, not Stanier ones as sported by Leander.

Nevertheless, it does make a change, & has already been reported, it's only a temporary livery.

Heritage Painting suggested the livery is historically correct for the loco as is.

I believe it's correct apart from the emblem. Leander apparently wore this livery with BRITISH RAILWAYS instead of the lion

That was the rumoured variant when black emerged as the chosen colour.
Guess it might be one for the future as there seems to be plans for regular refreshes.

Even better then - amazing what comes to light when people start digging. My info was from a thread elsewhere a few months ago. Will have to see if I can find out where from :)

According to the records, only three Jubilees carried the BR lined black livery with the lion emblem on the tender. They were 45679 Armada, 45699 Galatea and 45700 Amethyst.

Did 45700 outshopping coincide with its renaming?
Were they the only ones with the Stanier tenders to have the lion?

45700 as Britannia had BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender. When it was renamed, the tender had received the lion emblem. It had a Fowler tender, by the way.
45679 was probably fitted with a Fowler tender at the time.
    45699 received a Stanier tender in 1944.
So Galatea is the only Jubilee that would be correct in Leander's present livery. How apt!!

I can see the application of passenger liveries to the steam fleet on the mainline today being something that is set to continue. While this is more mixed traffic, this and Galateas livery into BR Maroon I think are quite refreshing. These engines are still working and earning revenue for a business. This idea of them having to be exactly historically accurate always means we look backwards. They remain in traffic and as such are just in a new chapter of their working lives, I can see BR Express passenger blue and brunswick green being given to an engine or two as other engines want to emulate the idea that changing liveries mid traffic is a good way of keeping in the spot light and gaining attention.

As for Leander, I know Mr Beet really knows his engines and this is his own loco. It looks very nice in Black. Keep up the good work...
