I think there in this instance is no problem with the landowner,he came up to salterwarth to send his sheep under the line and give us a cheery wave having asked a photographer earlier what time the train was due, clearly no issue there,In some ways I wish he'd have come up and taken some money for been so good willing to 25 people standing on his land!

Most of the land around Shap Wells is open access land so there should be no problem here best to check on the website for any restrictions before setting off

Natural England - Open Access maps

just type in Shap Wells and look at the bottom for any notices about land owners notes in force. On my visits to Shap I've never had any problems with the local farmers who are very friendly and approachable. It goes the same on the S&C find out who owns the land before you trespass someone local will always know who owns the land. On a previous trip to the S&C we asked a local garage owner who owned a particular field and traveled to the next village to ask for permission. The landowner was very friendly and gave us permission. This approach works well for our hobby and gets respect from the landowners it doesn't take much.

Thank You for the access maps. I couldn't agree more. I looked up Beattock as well. This is a very good reference site that many who aren't familiar w/ the area as well as die-hard Railfans who haven't done it before know how to do it. I would imagine that the Landowners if they get a chance enjoy the steam trains as well, considering how often charters go over Shap and Ais Gill. I decided to bookmark it, just in case I get to experience it someday, myself.

Considering that Union of South Africa is in top-notch conditions, these are going to be an exciting series of trips.

Yes, we do - and other ways of spotting banned members who try to get back on to the forum.

And we give out 'lines' to naughty boys and girls too. Well, it says that on another forum so it must be true.

Back on topic (ish..) and thanks for that link. Something that didn't occur to me on past visits to the area is the part regarding dogs as I have sometimes taken our mutt with us to keep the kids occupied whilst waiting for a railtour, example here:- http://www.openaccess.naturalenglan...trictionDocumentServlet?CaseNumber=2011015778

Ok she is either under close control when there are no stock about or on a lead when around stock but useful to know in the future where not to take her.

As we are aware we have two steam hauled trains to point our cameras at here in the north this coming Saturday 9 February. There is also a 2XCl37 diesel hauled railtour going north on the S&C, does anyone have at least a Hellifield pass time? Nearest I can work out from the organiser's times is that it will probably pass the Lancastrian whilst it's watering at Hellifield. Thanks in antiscipation.
