Technically the 86's can do 110MPH, it's the MK1/2 stock that limits to the ton, obviously that's still losing time on a 125MPH Pendo, but tours bypass places where Pendo's call, and with only 25MPH difference, it's probably not a million miles off keeping pace over Euston - Preston.

With a 47 you'd probably be on the reliefs virtually all the way to/from Crewe and add at least an hour in journey time in each direction, it's the slow acceleration by comparison of Diesels (and Steam to an extent) that makes the difference, in terms of top speed, a Deltic could match it and a 47 only loses 5MPH, but they take a lot longer to get there, I remember being told somewhere a while back, on charters out of Euston, by Wembley a 47 would slogging away to hit 70 while an 86/87 would be knocking on for 100 already.

Horsepower output tells the story, 2,580HP for a 47 against 5000HP for an 86

Well thats the crux of it.. the Class 86 on the London Euston to Preston IS 1 hour slower than a Pendo... one could get an extra hour in bed and still catch the CME at Preston by taking a Pendolino same on the return run too.

[bother: just remembered that Ralph is booking my ticket on the CME. Guess who's going to be in the guard's van]

Ralph - you're only as young as you feel!

    Sorry too late.
By the way did I mention the booking fee, handling charges, interest on the short term loan, green levy, carbon offset charge, and any other fee I can think of to slap onto your final account.

    Hi all

Does anyone know if 45305 has been allocated to any of the trains?

    Thankyou.

I've heard it said that there was an inadvertent pressing of a button on one of the cab mounted boxes of 'electrickery', which would make sense.

I understood that No 9 was down to do the first three then 'other' locos would be rostered.

There's always a lot of small-print when you deal with Ralph. He's also very fussy about how he should be paid - he certainly doesn't accept one internationally-accepted currency:

Given the loading is 12 coaches I doubt very much 45305 will be involved. A single black 5 however good a machine it may be could not take such a load over Shap and it would be silly to roster it for such a job.

Wise words. Would require assistance either double headed or diesel rear. If no. 9 is not to do them all perhaps the scot will feature as mooted earlier in the thread now it has had a test run.

This is assuming that all trains are planned to be load 12, of course. I would have thought that loading would have been taken into account when booking 45305, and, you know, if they have been lined up to do the runs, only to be usurped by 46115, then that's revenue lost to the 5305LA, is it not?

    Just sayin'...

5305 has taken 12 round the other way, changing locos at Preston on the northbound leg and then Carnforth on the way back, and RTC have run them that way as well.

but the climbs anti-clockwise although tough are not quite as gruelling as clockwise viz. northbound over Shap. I believe the trains were originally planned as 10coach workings and later increased to 12 due to demand. I think you may well find 46115 putting in one maybe two appearances

Has to be said that No9 has been in top form for the first 2 runs.

No diesel and storming over shap, JC and team should be rightly proud.

Well if we have 46115 on the 2nd March I don't think here will be any complaints from our party.

I don't think Mr. Dobbins(sp) would give 5305 more than 11 coaches. The Last few times 5305 went solo Northbound over Shap July/August 2011, The best performance of her was with 9 coaches. I saw the videos and she really struggled with the longer consists. 11 was performed well over S&C northbound. But still though that was not 12

It would be reasonable for 60009 to stick around or have 6115 power the trains given that 12 coaches get filled. 6115 does have a vintage tour on th 2nd though. What would fillin for that date?
