Stand to be corrected but isn't wcr or another of mr Smiths businesses a coal merchant? Not much hope for other customers if they can't get coal of suitable quality in sufficient quantity. Wonder if the loco hire charge to RTC is inclusive of coal or whether they source their own?

I think its time for a "blast from the past"!.......................................... :)

Back in the "Good Old Days" when you knew you had steam up front, but no idea what it would be until you saw it, and a lot less steam haulage than there is now, and never mind the "antics" of the linesiders - you'd be shot for it these days!!

25/2/1984.................................................... 4472 to Hellifield, 850 Hellifield - Carlisle............................ on of the slowest runs up the long drag that I experienced! Suffice to say we didn't get the usual number of run pasts at Appleby, so that we were right time at Carlisle. And oddly, there's no mention of the tour on 6 Bells Junction..............................

Superb action video as usual Steve, with a belting soundtrack. Was just a short way up the track from you at Mallerstang, where I witnessed the train passing Pendragon Castle....

    CME 01-03-14 016.JPG

And earlier, the train was exactly 302 miles from St. Pancras, where a smattering of steam-age "furniture" survives.

Judging by the superb photos and videos uploaded, most had a very enjoyable day yesterday. Thankfully, we enjoyed some wonderful sunlit scenes to capture - the view north from Birkett Common was a jaw dropper even without a steam hauled train roaring across the landscape!!

Despite comments made earlier in the thread, all thanks to the crew on the train, they put on a fantastic show despite some issues at the beginning of the steam hauled section; a standing start from Tebay with 12 on?? a magnificent effort. I'll be on the train next week and I can't wait.

Thanks again for sharing Steve, I'll hopefully put a video myself later.

    Cheers

    Alan

Usual scenario, two minutes later the most wonderful sunset appeared..................just in time for the drive home!!!

Anyway here's the delicate "Scot" crossing DANDRY MIRE viaduct.

One of the lovely things about the S&C..
where else is left in the UK where there is a double track mainline, with mainline steam using semaphore signals and still has visible telegraph poles ?
    (as per above picture).

It will be a shame when those semaphores all go..

Yesterday will no doubt go down as one to remember for the enthusiast fraternity, with the Scot's performance matching the conditions quite wonderfully.

My video of the return on the S&C is now up:

A work of epic brilliance. Fantastically conceived and wonderfully executed. Thanks for sharing but I think all our work here is now done by comparison!
